After some debate Brussels council gave permission Monday night, for a Listowel woman to operate a ‘‘food wagon” in the village on Homecoming weekend. Dorothy Hymers explained to council that she had recently operated for a weekend outside the Flea Market at the corner of Mill St. and Turnberry. Councillors said there had been some complaints that customers were buying food there but going to a local restaurant to use the washrooms. That brought up the subject of the nearby public washrooms and whetherthey shouldbeopen more. Councillors suggested that for Homecoming weekend the wash rooms should be open during the day but closed at night. Councillor Malcolm Jacobs reminded council of the problems the village had experienced with vandalism when washrooms had been left open at night. Council at first, on motion of Councillor Jacobs, told Mrs. Hym ers it would put off its decision until otherfoodservinggroupsin the community had been contacted to see if they objected. Later, how ever, the subject was reopened. Councillor Gordon Workman said he didn’t see how council could turn the request down. Mrs. Hymers had been gracious enough to approach council, hesaid, but he would be surprised if other mobile food facilities came into the village without permission that weekend. Council Neil McDonald said he thought council should do some thing to stop so many out of town people from coming in selling things and taking the money out of town to the detriment of local tax-paying businesses. Councillor Workman said he agreed it was a problem but that it had been happening for years and he didn’t see how council could prevent it. Councillor Jacobs said that if the Homecoming attracted as many people as expected, there should be enough food business for everybody. The food wagon selling chips and other fast food, he said, wouldn’t attract people away from church breakfasts, etc. Council passed a motion per mitting the wagon to locate at the corner of Mill St. E. and Turnberry for a licence fee of $5 per day.
