Live a Christian life walking with Christ
BY
REV. CHARLES CARPENTIER
BRUSSELS & ETHEL UNITED
CHURCHES
The story is told of a man who
came down out of the hills of North
Carolina, all dressed up, and with
his Bible under his arm.
A friend saw him and said; “Bill,
what does this mean? Where are
you going?’’ And Bill answered: “I
am going to New Orleans. I am
hearing that there is lots of
freerunning liquor and lots of
gambling and lots of burlesque
shows in that town. And I am to go
down there and find out myself,
firsthand. ’’ The friend thought
aboutthatfor a moment, then said;
“But Bill, why are you carrying
your Bible under your arm?’’ To
which Bill replied: “Well, if it’s as
good as they say it is, I might stay
over Sunday!’’
Many of us have this problem;
we “stay over’’. Sunday-after-
Sunday, to hear the Word of God,
but in between, we cast it aside.
The Word of God goes in one ear
and out the other.
I believe that we have to
recommit ourselves daily, not just
on Sunday. We have to renew our
commitment to Jesus Christ, on a
daily basis. I also believe that we
have to ask God to give us the
power to do this. This is counter to
human nature, and it requires help
from outside ourselves. That pow
er is available. The Christian life is
alifelongwalk, and it begins with a

turn. A turn away from obsession
with self, a realization that one
needs a saviour, and the willing
acceptance of Jesus Christ as the
saviour one needs.
To live the Christian life, is to
walk with God in Jesus Christ. Real
life with God, for us, begins when
Waterloo, May 24, when “Brent
Gordon’’, son of Ronald and
Rosanne Burdett, was baptized by
the minister, the Rev. John C.
Henderson. Following the service
over 20 family members were
entertained at the home of Ron and
Rosanne.

we make a conscious commitment,
as an act of the will to Jesus Christ
as our Saviour - our daily and only
Saviour - and we must allow him to
be the Lord of our lives. Then, we
take that first tiny step in faith. We
only do this when we know we need
a saviour and want a different kind
of life. This life must be sustained
and nurtured by prayer, worship,
the sacraments, and the fellowship
with others who are walking the
same way.
Remember Jesus’ words: “The
words I have spoken to you are
Spirit and Life. Yet some of you do

not believe.’’ “Remember’’ he
said: “What gives life is God’s
Spirit man’s power is of no use at
all.” (John 6).
What this says to me is this: hang
in there with this Jesus, and
completely trust in God, through
the manifestation of the Holy Spirit
with all his gifts. Instead of waiting
for some emotional experience we
should believe this, claim them,
and then act as if we had them -
FOR WE HAVE!
So, what does that Cross mean to
you and what are you going to do
about it?
