The Bear Facts Tamara Bearss a hot shot Tamara Bearss was the advanced division champion in the Knights of Columbus basketball shoot-off in Clinton last weekend, taking home the Regional Winner’s trophy, Tammy will represent Blyth Public School at the District Competition in Clinton on February 21. She is the daughter of Bill and Bonnie Bearss of Blyth. Cadets enjoy snow sports at Blyth One hundred and seventeen boys descended on the hill country of the Hebo Siertsema dairy farm of RR 3, Blyth, last week, and proceeded to have the time of their lives, despite temperatures of -18 degrees. They were members of the Maitland Valley Council of the CalvinistCadetCorps, andthey came from as far away as Exeter, Kincardine, Kitchener and Lis- towel to take part in the club’s annual Snow Derby, hosted this year by the Blyth Cadets at the Siertsema farm. Ranging in age from lOto 14, and shepherded by some 44 leaders, the boys from 12 Calvinist clubs spent the day racing with a cumbersome dog sled around a quarter-mile obstacle course which included such obstacles as a mountain rescue and building a lean-to in the bush, racing tobog gans down a 45 degree slope, and boiling water using little but a candle a quart can full of snow. Bert Siertsema, head councillor of the Blyth Calvinist Cadet Corps, said that none of the youngsters ever complained once they got moving, which was as soon as they arrived at 9 a.m., and that nobody got so much as a serious bruise despite a six and one half hour day of such strenuous activity. The Snow Derby is one of two major activities which unites all the clubs in one district each year, the other being the annual season “wrap-up” in early April, which will be held this year in Palmer ston . The events are hosted by each of the 12 district clubs in turn, so it will be 1999 before the Snow Derby returns to Blyth, although it will be hosted by the Goderich Calvinists next February. The Calvinist Cadet Corps is a nation-wide association of boys’ clubs, originated and still sponsor ed by the Christian Reformed Church, although other churches are slowly becoming involved, according to Mr. Siertsema. The boys work their way up through four levels - recruit, pathfinder, builder and guide - earning badges as they progress in three areas, skills, exploring, and discovering God’s word, in much the same manner as do the more familiar Boy Scouts. There is also a corps for girls, called the Calvinettes. Besides Mr. Siertsema, the Blyth club has four other council lors: Mike Siertsema of RR 2, Blyth; Jack Nonkes of RR 1, Auburn; Dick DeWit of RR 1, Ethel; and Everet Stryker of RR 4, Brussels. The 16 boys in the club meet each Wednesday evening at the Christian Reformed Church in Blyth, and the head Councillor says that any boy between 10 and 14 is welcome to join. Last Saturday, the Obstacle Course competition was won by two teams from Drayton, while the Blyth team came in third. Blyth also came in second in the toboggan race, but did not place in either the water-boiling contest or the sled race, which were won by Harriston and Listowel respective ly- —to)— Phone John Nixon 887-9417 agent for WEST WAWANOSH MUTUAL INS. She was pulled all the way back to school by one of the senior helpers. She really enjoyed the afternoon. Grade two went sledding at the Horticultural Park.
