Brussels UCW meets
U.C.W. members of Brussels
United Church met at Maple Villa
for their January meeting. Edna
Pearson opened the meeting, read
ing the following taken from a
speech by the late King George VI:
“I said to the Man who stood at
the Gate of the year
Give me a light that I may tread
softly into the unkown.’’
Portions of scripture were read
by Anne Smith, Ida Evans, Adah
Smithand JaneDeVries. Members
read together Psalm 72.
Anne Smith and Ida Evans read
about Lydia Gruch. She and her
family immigrated from England
to Saskatchewan. She went to
highschool and after completing
Grade 12, went to Normal. She
taught English in night school and
was offered a scholarship to study
at a Christian College graduating
in 1927. The first woman Minister
in Canada, Rev. Lydia Gruch, later
was ordained in the United Church
as Dr. of Divinity.
The meeting closed with the
hymn, “What a friend we have in
Jesus’’ and with prayer by
Edna Pearson. Lunch war served
and a social time enjoyed.

The Wingham Voice for Life
executive members were optimis
tic at their January meeting for the
fu ture of the unborn children due to
the two Private Member’s Bills
being considered by the House of
Commons, One bill, initiated by
Mr. Gus Mitges, asks for protec
tion of the unborn in the Charter of
Rights. The other, introduced by
Mr. Laurence O’Neil, M.P., deals
with legal counsel for the unborn.
Further pro-life promotion was
provided by the continuing TV
commercial “Aren’t they Forget
ting Someone’ ’ aired on CKNX.
Sally Campeau explained the
scheduled 20 showings for Janu

March.
A peaceful protest was held at
Morgetaler’s abortion clinic in
Torontoin the form of a 24-hour
prayer vigil. Six members from the
Pro-Life group attended the pro

since it opened in 1984.
Another positive aspect favour
ed by the pro-life executive is the
organization REAL Women. Its
objectives include the reaffirma

most important unit and the
support of the right to life of all the
innocent individuals from concep
