Brussels Curling Club holds Christmas jitney C5>menu The Brussels Curling Club held the Christmas Jitney at the arena on Monday, December 29 with five rinks competing. After playing three six-end games, first prize went to the team of Ernie Lewington, skip; Donna Crusaders bring home crown from Milverton tournament BYLOISMcARTER The Brussels Intermediate team participated in a tournament in Milverton this past weekend in which six teams were involved consisting of Wellesley, Drayton, Monkton, Lucknow, Milverton and Brussels. The Crusaders played their first game Saturday morning against Lucknow in a good close game. The first 20 minutes of play were scoreless. Ater playing 8:31 of the second period, Brian Deitner assisted by Dave Golley and Len Stampergot Brussels’ first goal. At the mid-way mark Dave Stephen­ son assisted by Ken Cousins put the Crusaders ahead by two- completing the second period. A minute and 23 seconds into the third Dave Stephenson and Rob Core combined for the third goal. Lucknow scored their first goal at 7:37 and then added another at 12:55 but goalie Keith McClure kept them at bay for the remainder ofthe period to claim Brussels’ 3 - 2 victory. BEAT MONKTON Crusaders played their second game on Saturday afternoon a- gainst Monkton. Monkton slipped the first goal past goalie Mike Smith just two minutes into the game buv they didn’t do it again. Brussels’ Dave Stephenson scored at 5:16 assisted by Ken Cousins and Brian Tenpas with Ken Higgins scoring from Gerry Wheeler just two minutes later to complete the scoring for the first period. Ken Cousins scored unassisted at 1:16 ofthe second period with Dave Stephenson assisted by Brian Tenpas scoring just three minutes later. Gerry Wheeler assisted by Kevin Hastie scored midway through the period to give Brussels a 4 - 1 lead which held for the remainder of the period. Dave Stephenson completed his hat-trick at 5:52 of the third after being set up by Peter Bennett and Ken Cousins. The remainder of the period was scoreless giving Brussels 6 - 1 victory for its second tournament win. BEAT DRAYTON FOR TITLE The team returned to Milverton on Sunday at 3 p.m. for the championship game against Dray­ ton. Dave Stephenson opened the scoring for Brussels assisted by Dave Murray after playing 4:18 minutes of hockey. Play continued until there was only 1:30 left in the period and Jim Campbell assisted by Mike Watson added to the Brussels lead. Both goalies stood strong as they kept the second period a scoreless one for both teams. Gerry Wheeler scored from Randy Clarke in the first minute of the third period. Drayton got on the scoreboard mid-way through the period with their first goal. Ken Higgins completed the Bauer, vice; Don Bray, second and Barbara Alexander, lead with 47.75 points. Coming in second place with 35.75 points was the team of Ross Veitch, skip; Yvonne Knight, vice; Gary Martin, second and Brent Brussels scoring unassisted with 49 seconds remaining on the clock to give Brussels their 4 - 1 victory and the tournament champion­ ship. Dave Montgomery of the Crusa­ ders won the $50 shoot-out for participating players from each team. LEAGUE GAMES The Crusaders played two league games at home on the previous weekend. They were at home to Monkton on the Saturday night. Brussels Dave Stephenson assisted by Dave Montgomery and Brian Tenpas scored the only goal of the first period. They also controlled the second period as they scored five unansw­ ered goals. Those scoring the goals were Gerry Wheeler, Randy Clarke, Dave Stephenson, Rob Core and Jim Campbell. Assists went to Dave Montgomery and Stephenson, Kevin Hastie, Brian Dietner, Kevin Deitner, Brian Tenpas on the various goals. Monkton scored their only goal with just 26 seconds remaining in the period. The third period had Gerry Wheeler scoring from D. Mont­ gomery and Stephenson at 13:32 and then, with only 1:52 remain­ ing, Dave Montgomery scored from D. Stephenson and Paul Montgomery for the 8 - 1 win. Sunday night had the Crusaders at home for a very rugged game of hockey against Arthur. Arthur scored in the opening minute of the game and there was only 4:04 remaining in the period when Kevin Dietner tied the score unassisted. Third prize was won by Stew Steiss, skip; Annette Lewington, vice; Kerry Bauer, second; and Rob Veitch, lead with 34 points. Fourth prize was won by Brad Ipeiran, skip; Pauline Patterson, vice; MargTaylor, second; and Steven Steiss, lead with 34 points. Consolation went to Fred Smith, skip; Velma Locking, vice; Pete Exel, second and Kelly Bauer, lead. Brussels in the lead in the second period. They reversed the play to score at 6:29 to add another Crusader goal. It was 1:51 when Arthur scored to come within one at the end of the second period. The third period had Brussels erupting for three quick goals in a span of 75 seconds. Randy Clarke scored from Dave Montgomery for goal number one, with Dave Mongtomery scoring two and three with assists from Peter Bennett and Brian Tenpas. JimCampbell scored at 15:39 from Kevin Deitner and Len Stamper for the fourth goal of the period. Dave Stephenson scored unassisted at the half-way point. Gerry Wheeler scored from Kevin Deitner at 3j :07 with Ken Cousins scoring unassisted at 2:09. Arthur completed their scoring with 1:29 on the clock and then with just 26 seconds left in the game Jim Campbell scored from Gerry Wheeler to give Brussels the 11-3 victory. A number of players had to leave the game because of various injuries due to unnecessary rough­ ness along the boards, the most of which went unpenalized.
