Two area women, Mrs. Shirley
Blewett of R. R. 1 Kincardine and
Mrs. Dawn Viglasky of Port Elgin,
attended the Ontario Pork Con-
gress in Stratford on Wednesday,
June '15th, as guests of CKNX-AM
and FM Radio.
The lucky ladies were winners of
a Bar-B-Q Pork Recipe Contest that
CKNX-AM. and FM Radio ran to
select two recipes for FM morning
personality Brian Elmslie and
production manager Jerry Chomyn
to cook in the King of the Hams
Pork Bar-B-Q Contest. The King of
Hams 'Bar-B-Q Contest is just one
of the many daily events at the
three day long Pork Congress held
in the Stratford Coliseum.
. Mrs. Blewett's recipe for a
bar-b-q'd pork loin roast was
prepared in the contest by Brian
Elmslie. And, Mrs. Viglasky's
recipe for barb-b-q Pork Sausage
with apricot sauce' was cooked by
Jerry Chomyn.
Each' received an AM-FM clock
radio' for having their recipe
selected from the many received in
the mail by CKNX. Besides
winning the radios...both Mrs.
Blewett and Mrs. Viglasky were
taken to the Pork Congress to
watch Brian and Jerry...the CKNX
Happy Cookers, take part in the
competition. The Happy Cookers
placed third and fourth in the
competiton for that dayl
After the contest, Mrs. Blewett
and Mrs. Viglasky were shown
around the Pork Congress...watch-
ed pork cutting demonstrations...
attended consumer information
programs... and each received a
pork recipe cook book. A tour of the
city of Stratford followed...and the
day ended with , dinner for both
ladies, compliments of CKNX-AM
and FM Radio.
Receives Collar
At L.O.L. Meeting
On Tuesday evening the County
°L.O.L. of West Bruce held' their
Semi-County meeting in the Am-
berley Orange Hail with a large '
turn out. Those attending were
from Listowel, Brussels, Blyth,
Walkerton, Underwood, Kincard-
ine, Kinloss and Amberley.
Guest speaker at the meeting
was Right Worshipful Brother
David Worden of Listowel, Grand
Secretary of the Grand Orange
Lodge of Ontario West who gave a
very inspiring talk. Others
speaking were Brothers Reg God-
frey, William Emmerton, Emmer-
son Mitchell, Harvey Jacklin,.
Chester Emmerton, David Mac-
Lennan, James Campbell, Keith
Kerslake and Clare VanCamp,
County Master of North Huron.
County Master Brother James A.
Campbell conducted the meeting.
The highlight of the meeting was
the presentation of Past County
County's collar to Brother Arthur
McCormick. Brother Worden pres-
ented the collar to Brother McCor-
mick. Brother McCormick thanked
the County for the lovely collar and
the help he got when he was
County Master.
In the meeting the County Lodge
decided to go to Bayfield on July 16
for the 12th July celebration. A
card was sent to Brother Bert Alton
who is in the Wingham Hospital.
A two minutes silence was held
in memory of Brother George
Nelson of Walkerton who was
Master at the time of his passing. It
was decided to hold the annual-
meeting in Kincardine. Brother
'Campbell then closed the meeting.
After the meeting the Amberley
Brothers served a very lovely '
lunch.

Grandmothers
Day
The Grandmothers' meeting of
St. Helens Women's Institute• has
held in the hall with the president
Mrs. James Curran welcoming all
the ladies.
The meeting opened, with the
Opening Ode and the Mary Stewart
Collect. The roll call "A modern
custom which our grandmothers
never dreamed of" was.answered
by 24 members and 4 visitors. The
secretary-treasurer gave the finan-
cial report. The assistant secretary
reported on all cards sent. The
correspondence was read.
Mrs. Michael Naylor and Mrs.
Peter Chandler are to attend the
• 80th anniversary of Institute at
Bingeman Park in July: Awards are
to be presented to two math
students at Brookside School. Mrs.
Gordon Lyons gave a very interest-
ing report on her trip to the
Officer's Conference in Waterloo.
Mrs. Peter Chandler gave the
highlights of the Huron-West
District annual in Clinton.
All sang "Mockingbird Hill".
The motto "In youth we learn. in
age we understand" was prepared
and given by Mrs. Harold Gaunt.
Mrs. Andrew Gaunt prepared
the topic on "The Ladders of Life",
"Middle Age and Old Age". She
closed with 2 poems of Edgar
Guest.
Mrs. Keith Tyler presided for the
following program. Mrs. Harold,
Cooper gave a reading "Grandma'
from Harry J. Boyle's book " Pinch
of Sin". Several prizes were given
to the grandmothers: the oldest
grandmother, Mrs. William Ruth-
erford; grandma with a grand-
child's birthday closest to June
2nd, Mrs. James Aitchison; grand-
mother with a grandchild particip-
ating in a wedding soon, Mrs.
Charles McDonald; grandma with
most flowers on hers dress, Mrs.
Harold Cooper; grandma who took
grandchildren 'to difiner recently,
Mr's. Hilliard Jefferson.
A reading, "Looking Back-
wards" was given by Mrs. Frank
Mewhinney. Mrs. Peter Chandler
won the lucky chair prize. A contest
"Old Time Articles" was conduct-
ed by Mrs, Michael Naylor and won
by Mrs. Hilliard Jefferson.
Mrs. Gordon Struthers gave a
reading, "What is a Grandmoth-
er", written by a 3 year old. The
current events were prepared by
Miss Beatrice McQuillin and given
by Mrs. Harold Cooper. Mrs.
Gordon Struthers and Mrs. Robert
Aitchison are to purchase salt and
peppers and cream and sugars for
the hall.
The meeting closed with 0
Canada and the Institute Grace. A
social time followed with Mrs.
Frank Mewhinney and Mrs. Keith
Tyler serving a delicious lunch.
Ackert Reunion
On Sunday afternoon, members
of the Ackert family gathered at the
home of Bonnie and Ernest Ackert,
at Holyrood. for their annual
reunion. All enjoyed a bountiful
buffet luncheon. followed by a
pleasant afternoon of visiting and
games.
Ra.:%,nard Ackert presided for a
short business session, during
which he described .plans to
commemorate the fact that this
year. 1977, marks 100 years since
his grandfather John Henry Ack-
ert, settled at Holyrood where he
operated a saw mill and grist mill.
Jack Ackert was appointed
president fOr the coming year, with
secretary Nancy Rowe. The
reunion will be held next year at
the home of Jack and Betty Ackert
ip Kincardine, the second Sunday
in July.
