school English courses and how
they are taught. Parents could
express their concerns and teach-
ers could explain, enlarge and
promote discussion just like they do
in the classroom. Teachers could
learn to see parents' concern about
what their children are taught as
legitimate and parents could un-
derstand that the books in question
can be used in a constructive,
careful way. In a letter to the board
one. parent commented "Those
who• seek evil, find evil, and Those
,wtio seek good, find good".
Interested boatd members will
be attending a meeting with the
Secondary School English teachers
in June when the text books are
chosen for next September. I'll
certainly be there - any comments?
The Education committee of the
Board met with elementary school
lye atth an-0- —physical- —educ at
teachers to try to determine what
all so called sex education classes
concern. The teachers laid out what
they termed a family living course,
pointing out that very little
guidance for the program is given
by the Ministry of Education. The
teachers develop the curriculum to
be used at the elementary level and
are charged with the task of
imparting the information to the
children. The program is stretched
over three years beginning in
Grade 6. The first year the class is
introduced to their bodies they are
told why they are undergoing
physical and emotional changes as
they develop physkally. Puberty is
defined as a state in development
between child and adult and the
body changes that take place
during puberty are explained. The
reproductive process is explained
and students made aware of how
human life 'begins. Self control is
touched on as children are made
aware of the fact that they are
responsible for their own behav-
iour.
Grade 7 then moves into social
development through adolescence.
Dating is discussed and compared
to friendships between members of
the opposite sex. In Grade 8, the
students concentrate on family
relationships and their values.
From there they learn more of
faith, security, emotional needs,
defense mechanism, personal in-
volvement in family activities,
responsibilities to families and
what each can do to help produce a
happy home life.
The teachers preferred to teach
the material co-ed, stating that the
questions asked early in the course
are usually asked by the more
outgoing children but as''a comfort
level is. established and rapport
between students is reached the
questions become more specific.
They added that quite often what
some boys ask will be of benefit to
girls and vice versa, and claim that
the origin of the question is
important since boys want to know
about girls 'and girls about boys.
Some of the questions, the teachers
stated, would be embarrassing for
a parent and probably better
answered by a teacher or someone
other than a parent. If a teacher is
uncomfortable discussing the sub-
ject, the teacher can always turn to
the health nurse for assistance.
Some trustees stated that there
may be a need to discuss sex from a
moral standpoint stressing it from a
husband and wife angle rather than
from a physical aspect, but all
agreed it should be called "Family
Life Education".

' if you think

By Marian Zinn
We have had two very interest-
ing board meetings during the past
month, in which two controversial
topics were discussed. At the
Board meeting of April 25th, some
200 people attended to hear
English Department Heads, stud-
ents and principals of the five
secondary schools in the county
defend the use of some contempor-
ary books. This special meeting
was called after a parent had made
a presentation at an earlier meeting
when he stated that secondar'
school students were subjected to
"literary • filth". The books he
referred to were 'The Grapes of
Wrath' and 'Of Mice and Men' by
John Steinbeck: 'The Diviners' by
M. Laurence, and 'Catcher in the
' by -Li) _ S irig r . •
The representatives from the
various high schools, spoke on the
use, the reaction, and the import-
ance 'of teaching modern literature
to senior students. All agreed that
there was nothing immoral or
offensive about the books and if
taken in proper context act as a
valuable learning device for the,
students. Audrey Tiffin, English
department head at F. E. Madill
Secondary School, Wingham, ex-
plained that literature acts as a
mirror of life. She went on to say
that she commended the parents'
interest but wants them to trust the
students' intelligence and the
teachers' professional duties to
respond to literature. One student
commented, "We study some 10 to
12 books each year. We are delving
into the theme, character and plot;
at symbolic meanings and concepts
and certainly looking beyond 4
letter words". Mrs. Tiffin went on
to say that we need all types of
books to help students know more
about life. The classic "Tale of Two
Cities" has a leading character
calmly knitting while blood pours in
the gutters. The language in the
novel is good, perhaps because
`their heads were off before they
could say anything wrong'.
Both groups have legitimate
concerns. Some parents are bewil-
dered that books which they think
are obscene are being taught in
high school. Other parents support .
the teachers who say that they
don't focus on obscenity when the
books are discussed and that
shielding students from life as it's
shown in some contemporary
novels won't help them face the
realities of twentieth century life.
One principal suggested that
committees be set up in each
town's high school, made up of
parents and teachers. The parents
to read, talk about and attempi•-to
understand the books on high
