I have formed a particular friendship with Mrs. Oliver Mc- Charles who shares my love for animals. Sadly, our beautiful marmalade cat, Reko, was killed on the road on Christmas Eve. I found Jiim first thing on Christmas morning and I must adrnit the tears ran down. However, I wrote to a B.B.C. chat program, offering to take in a sad and tattered stray. Within minutes of the broadcast, I was swamped with offers and took the most pathetic, brought to me by local children, a poor frightened unwanted morsel who adopted us at once as we adopted him. I wish you could see him now after a fortnight of love and care, li)ce a prizewinner! The children call to Kspect him now and then and we /discuss cruelty and neglect, how awful they are, so I'm hoping the ripples will spread. But now I'm ashamed of my tears for I've had another letter from Mrs. McCharles in which she tells me that her oldest son has died. I read this with great sadness. Allan was only 46, leaving a wife and three children aged 12, 8 and 5 to mourn his loss. My sympathy goes out to them all in their grief and I pray that in time they will be comforted. Mrs. McCharles is, I think, a lady of great strength and deep faith. It is hard to understand why a fine big prosperous young man should be carried away in his prime but her quiet acceptance will temper the sorrow she feels. Later on, I hope this dear lady will visit me here in Ulster as she tells me she likes to travel. Later, too', I believe a younger son is to be married and, I send good wishes to him and to his prospective bride. May they have a long and happy life together. In November '76, we had a surprise visitor in Mrs. Mary Clark, 551 Atha St. East, Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan. I managed to recognize her even though we'd never met since I left the prairies all those years ago when I was only ten. •In a letter published in our local paper, she wrote: "I can't go back to Canada without saying how glad I am I came to Ireland and found the good side of the situation here and how bravely you people are carrying on. One has to have faith, patience and strength to continue froth day to day and I hope DUNGANNON CONTINUED FROM l'AGE I your readers who have been especially kind and generous to me at Christmas. Mrs. Sheila Camp- bell, Box 279 Lucknow, is a most faithful correspondent and each letter from her is a surprise package bearing some small gift, a variety of attractive seals to suit ahead. yqu will all be helped and comforted through these troubled times. Although I arrived with many fears and apprehensions, enjoyed my stay 'so much I ,plan another trip next year, bringing some of my family with me. No matter how I talk; they'll never believe Ireland's so beautiful unless they see it for themselves". I'm sending you a photograph of Mrs. Clark, taken in my home, and later, if you wish, I will send you a copy of my B.B.C. broadcast. If you' had space for it, I think your readers would be greatly interest- ed. We hear you're having a bitter winter this year. People in this country don't really know what winter means. A week of snow and ice has everyone indignant and confused. They're not used to' it, you see. We had two or three days of frost and fog but it's all cleared away now and already snowdrops are blooming in my garden, with daffodils and hyacinths budding, trees and shrubs bursting into leaf, grass green as it always is, birds singing. You could say it's spring any time! ; My thanks to you for your ' continuing kindness and support. With friendliest thoughts to you all,
