IN MEMORIAM
CUMMING - In loving memory of
our dear aunt Jean who passed
away February 1st, 1973.
They say time heals all sorrow
And helps one to forget
But time so far has only proved
How much we miss you yet.
How can we explain to others
The loss we feel inside
We only know we miss you
Our tears we try to hide.
It broke our hearts to lose you
But you did not go alone
A part of us went with you
The day God called you home l
Sadly missed by niece Karen

TODAY'S HEALTH
There is no
sure way
to cure cOlds
and 'flu
by David Woods
Over the centuries, colds and 'flu
have been the subjects of more
mythology and misapprehension
than probably any other afflictions
known to people.
The Italians coined the name in-
fluenza because they thought that
disease was influenced by the stars.
For: colds, the ancient Greeks and
Romans used liquorice as a remedy,
and since then there have been pro-
ponents at various times of tincture
of myrrh, garlic, and more recently,
massive doses of vitamin C.
But, sad to tell, there's still no
,sure-fire cure for the common cold.
And, unlike 'flu, no positive' way of
preventing it.
Perhaps this is because the big-
gest myth of all is that the cold is
pretty basic stuff — therefore, find-
ing a remedy is a simple matter
beneath the dignity of high-powered
medical researchers.
Not so. The cold is highly corn- '
plex, consisting of as many as 100
different, and quite-separate, viruses.
Scientists are looking not for one
solution, one cure — but for scores
of 'them.
That may be cold comfort for the
sneezing, snuffling, bunged-up suf-
ferer. But, take heart. You may not
be able to get rid of your cold
(despite .what the TV commercials
would have you believe) but it's

possible to make the common cold
a bit easier to live with.
How? By using ASA for the
headachy part of it, syrup for "the
cough and nasal sprays for the
runny nose. Though sprays and oral
decongestants should be used spar-
ingly, and with caution, they might
create other problems.
At present, there's no sure cure,,
an ounce of prevention is your best
bet. This consists of physical fitness,
proper .diet, sensible clothing, and
plenty of fresh air. This combina-
tion; since you get colds from
people, will at' least serve to
strenghten your resistance to cold
viruses.
Unlike colds, 'flu is accompanied
by fever and other symptoms that
may affect the whole body. But,
there's no' wonder pill to bring "in-
stant relief' — and there are many
varieties of this disease too. Your
doctor will prescribe something to
bring 'down your temperature, and
recommend plenty of fluids and a
few days rest.
But, until the researchers come up
with .,answers, the many types of
colds and 'flu are ailments we'll just
have to live with.
A pamphlet entitled Colds, the
'flu is available from the Health
Resource Centre, Communications
Branch, Ontario Ministry of Health,
Hepburn Block, Queen's Park,
Toronto, Ontario M7A 152.
