The Italians coined the name in- fluenza because they thought that disease was influenced by the stars. For: colds, the ancient Greeks and Romans used liquorice as a remedy, and since then there have been pro- ponents at various times of tincture of myrrh, garlic, and more recently, massive doses of vitamin C. But, sad to tell, there's still no ,sure-fire cure for the common cold. And, unlike 'flu, no positive' way of preventing it. Perhaps this is because the big- gest myth of all is that the cold is pretty basic stuff — therefore, find- ing a remedy is a simple matter beneath the dignity of high-powered medical researchers. Not so. The cold is highly corn- ' plex, consisting of as many as 100 different, and quite-separate, viruses. Scientists are looking not for one solution, one cure — but for scores of 'them. That may be cold comfort for the sneezing, snuffling, bunged-up suf- ferer. But, take heart. You may not be able to get rid of your cold (despite .what the TV commercials would have you believe) but it's HUTTON GENERAL STORE - on a busy highway with living quarters attached, as well, as 2 extra apartments for added income. The condition of the building is very good throughout and is the only store in the village. WINGHAM - seed cleaning and seed treating plant. The owner has had a good income from this business but • illness forces sale. They have not only cleaned local grain but retailed grass seed and registered seed grain in the area. The price is low and we ask for a reasonable offer. TEESWATER - brand new 3 bedroom house on a 96' x 132' lot. Features include 4 piece bath, living room, dining area and modern kitchen, electric heat and full basement. The asking price is only $29,900. LUCKNOW AREA beautiful 3 bedroom brick home on a one acre lot. The many good features include a new triple garage, 2 piece bath up, 4 piece down, broadloom throughout. Shown by appoint- ment. OUR MANY FARM LISTINGS include 39 acre highway farm, having 3 barns set up for hog operation. Very attractive and newly renovated brick home that is worth almost the total asking price of $55,000. WE NEED HOUSES IN LUCKNOW. f' MEL MATHERg Wingham 357-3208 Representing LLOYD W. HUTTON REAL ESTATE LTD. Broker, Kincardine 396-2061 possible to make the common cold a bit easier to live with. How? By using ASA for the headachy part of it, syrup for "the cough and nasal sprays for the runny nose. Though sprays and oral decongestants should be used spar- ingly, and with caution, they might create other problems. At present, there's no sure cure,, an ounce of prevention is your best bet. This consists of physical fitness, proper .diet, sensible clothing, and plenty of fresh air. This combina- tion; since you get colds from people, will at' least serve to strenghten your resistance to cold viruses. Unlike colds, 'flu is accompanied by fever and other symptoms that may affect the whole body. But, there's no' wonder pill to bring "in- stant relief' — and there are many varieties of this disease too. Your doctor will prescribe something to bring 'down your temperature, and recommend plenty of fluids and a few days rest. But, until the researchers come up with .,answers, the many types of colds and 'flu are ailments we'll just have to live with. A pamphlet entitled Colds, the 'flu is available from the Health Resource Centre, Communications Branch, Ontario Ministry of Health, Hepburn Block, Queen's Park, Toronto, Ontario M7A 152.
