ed the workshop on "Natural
Environment,. Sand and Gravel"
held at the Brookside Public School
on Monday evening, December 13.
Grant Farrish, chairman for this
program introduced George Pen-
fold from the Planning Depart-
!tient. Questions answered were:
1. What would you consider to be
the major natural environment
areas in Ashfield? 2. What value do
you place on the pre'servaiion of the
Natural Environment? 3. Whit
obligations do you believe the
indivgnal land owner and the
Government have in preserving the
Natural Environment?' 4. Where
are the locations of the major
deposits of sand and gravel in the
Township? 5. What policies should
the Plan adopt regarding the
development of these deposits? 6.
Should the Plan contain policies to
ensure reclaimation of the land-
scape after the sand and gravel has
been mined? In other plans George
Penfold said if anything that was
zoned' natural environment, no
development is permitted. In order
to maintain a water table, 20% of
an area should be in forest.
Ashfield Township has from 6% to
8%. Anyone wishing to plant trees
can do so at a very minimal charge.

SCHOOL NEWS
On Wednesday, December 15
the parents and teachers played the
St. Joseph's school, Kingsbridge
"Edmonton Senior House League
Team" at volleyball. Led by Nancy,
"Provincial Park" the team captain
and "Ferocious',_' Father Denting-
er, player of the game, the
parent-teacher combination won 2
games to 1.
The Edmonton team insisted that
they had thrown the game in order
to pass their year but the lack of
team spirit was apparent when
captain "Honest" Tom Foran
asked if he could join, the other
team.
The firSt game was given :to the
students so that they would not feel
badly. Even with the constant
deliberate mistakes by the Doherty
Parent Clan it was difficult for
Thumbs Hendriks 'and Mike Slap
Frayne to return the easy shots.
Eventually the students were able
to take the game. •
-The second game saw the
parents build up an early lead with
Eager Eedy powering serve after
serve, across the net in such a
manner that the' opposition could
not return them. Bitter Berry's
serves were likened to) cannon
blasts by Jean, the Trip, Vogt who
was literally knocked over each
time she tried to return the serve.
With the second game going to
the teachers and parents, the fans
realized that the teachers were
going to win. Each time a member
of this team served a tremendous
cheer broke out intimidating the
collapsing Edmonton team. The
coach of the Edmonton team, also a
member of • the parent-teacher
team, tried to pull Darlene, The
Hammer, Austin together for her
serve but the coaching by Zealous
Zyluk was in vain. Melba National
Park, with her devastating returns
finally won the game, and match for
the stronger team.
On the winning serve Madcap
Frayne sprang onto the floor and
led the many supporters of the
winning team in a,' roof rousing
cheer of victory. Due to the
importance of the game, television
and radio coverage were blacked
out but some people, claim it was
seen in Kingsbridge, Ontario.
