Farm Brussels Stockyards Pig prices head back up Choice steers and heifers sold on a strong demand at Brussels Stockyards on Friday with slaugh­ ter heifers selling steady to last week, and slaughter steers selling $1 higher. Cows traded steady and pigs were sharply higher. There were 985 cattle, 319 pigs, and 87 sheep and goats on offer. Choice steers sold for $83 to $86 with sales to $89; good steers went at $79 to $83. A spotted steer consigned by Murray Shiell of RR 3, Wingham, weighing 1130 lbs., sold for $89 with his total offering of 40 steers, averaging 1163 lbs., selling for an overall price of $85.48. Five steers consigned by Maple Emblem Farms of RR 1, Dungann­ on, averaging 1190 lbs., sold for $86.60, with their total lot of 42 steers, averaging 1215 lbs., selling for an average price of $84.76. Six steers consigned by Frank Dolmage of RR 1, Seaforth, averaging 1250 lbs., sold for an average price of $84.26 with sales to$85.75. Twenty-seven steers consigned by Keith Johnston of RR 2, Bluevale, averaging 1132 lbs., sold for an average price of $83.90, with sales to $85.50. Choice exotic heifers sold at $82 to $85, with sales to $88.50; good heifers brought 79 to $81. A gold heifer consigned by Rick Smithof RR4, Ripley, weighing 1020 lbs., sold for $88.50 with his total offering of 30 heifers, averag­ ing 1131 lbs., selling for an overall price of $84.08. A heifer consigned by Fred Marshall of RR 3, Fergus, weigh­ ing 1170 lbs., sold for $85.75, with his total lot of 29 heifers, averaging 1137 lbs., selling for an average price of $83.24. A Limousin heifer consignedby Murray Mulvey of RR 1, Clifford, weighing 1120 lbs., sold for $85.25, with his total offering of 36 heifers, averaging 1126 lbs., selling for an overall price of $82.53. Twenty-eight heifers consigned by Glen Johnston of RR 2, Bluevale, averaging 983 lbs., sold for an average price of $81.53, with sales to $84.75. Twenty-two heif­ ers consigned by Harold Wolfgram of RR 3, Stratford, averaging 1023 lbs., sold for an overall price of $81.72 with sales to $83.25. Choice cows went for $51 to $57; good cows brought $47 to $50; and Cannes and cutters fetched $43 to $46. Thirty to 40 lb. pigs traded to a high of 45 cents per lb.; 40 to 50 lb. pigs traded to a high of 60 cents per lb.; 50 to 60 lb. pigs traded to a high of 60 cents per lb.; 60 to 70 lb. pigs traded to a high of 51 cents per lb.; and 70 to 80 lb. pigs traded to a high of 46 cents per lb. Light weight lambs traded to a high of $1.04 per lb.; medium weight lambs traded to a high of 91 centsperlb.;and heavy weight lambs traded to a high of 75 cents per lb. Blyth to host HFA annual meeting Oct. 14 Blyth will host the annual meeting of the Huron County Federation of Agriculture Friday night, October 14. The event this year will feature a dinner and dance instead of the usual guest speaker. There will be a social hour from 6 - 7 p.m. at the Blyth and District Community Centre followed by a short busi­ ness session that will see the presentation ofOntario Ministry of Agriculture and Food Centennial Awards. Tickets are available at $10 per person from the regional directors or from township presidents of the Federation’s county office at 482- 9642 (Mondays and Fridays only). Agri-Food Week held Oct. 3-10 in Ontario Hundreds of farmers and farm organizations across Ontario will be encouraging consumers to “Buy the food Ontario grows’’, during the seventh annual Agri­ Food Week, Oct. 3-10. “When consumers put food in their shopping baskets, they should stop and think about what they’re buying,’’ Agriculture and Food Minister Jack Riddell said. “By buying Ontario products, they’re not just filling their carts. They’re supporting an industry which contributes significantly to the economy of our province, and puts safe, high-quality, affordable food on their plates,’’ Riddell said.
