Registration at Brussels Public School last Thursday netted only a total of 14 Beavers, nine Cubs and three Scouts, despite the fact that there has been no Scout troop in the area for at least the past 25 years, according to the movement’s Group Committee chairman Agnes Proulx, who said that an error on the part of The Citizen in failing to run their advertisement for the second week last week could be partly to blame. The leaders of all three groups say they will go ahead with activities despite the low numbers of registrations, but that they would certainly like to see more boys participating. Registrations can still be taken at any time by phoning any one of the leaders, Winners' trophies presented at meeting The Brussels and District Horti cultural Society met on September 12 with guests from Seaforth present. Plaques were presented to the winners of the Rose Show and August Flower Show, each one inscribed with name and date. An account of severe damage to Kew Gardens due to a hurricane in the south eastern part of England was read. These famous gardens outside of London have one of the most important collections of plants, shrubs and trees in the world, many of which are irreplace- Brussels People Compiled by Marilyn Higgins Call887-9089 able. The guest, Miss Jane Thompson from the Maitland Valley Conser vation Authority, proved tobe a wonderfully interesting and well- informed young lady on the subject of Acid Rain. The four chief culprits which cause acid rain pollution in Ontario, other than that which comes across the American border are: 1. Most types of transporta tion; 2. Ontario Hydro; 3. Lake Head Smelting and 4. Inco. When smoke from these sources hits rain droplets it forms acid rain or acid snow whose run-off in the spring is very damaging to rivers and streams. This causes the death of smallfishand otherwater crea tures which interrupts the food chain. The facade of many buildings is also damaged by pollution and forest products are lowered in value. Members hope the forces at work to decrease all types of pollution may have increasing success as time goes by. Cub Leader Larry Proulx of RR 1, Ethel said, and all boys are welcome. Mr. Proulx and Ross Heming way of RR 3, Brussels are both new leaders thisyear, and will take over the leadership of the 1st Brussels Cub Pack from Rob in Dunbar of RR 1, Ethel, who will now lead the 1st Brussels Scout Troop, along with Roy Alcock of RR 5, Brussels.
