The Citizen, 1988-09-07, Page 22PAGE 22. THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 7, 1988. County council briefs Huron, Perth say 'no thanks' to province's gift Huron and Perth Counties want to get together to look a gift horse in the mouth in regards in the province’s wanting to turn over Highway 83 through Exeter to the counties. Huron county had earlier stated it didn’t want to take over the highway but now Perth County wants to have a meeting of the town counties plus area municipalities to map out a united stand on the issue. A meetingof thecounties plus Exeter and Grand Bend and Usborne, Stephen and Hay town ships will be organized to discuss the matter. Exeter Reeve Bill Mickle asked, at the September 1 meeting of county council, why the meeting was being held when the county had already said it wanted no part of being given the highway. Dennis Merrall, county engineer said Perth county feels saying no isn’t enough. He pointed out that even though the counties have spoken out against the transfer, there is nothing to stop the Ministry of Transport and Communications from dumping the highway in the counties’ laps anyway. It should be made very clear, he said, that Highway 83 is functioning very well as a provincial highway and should be left that way. ***** With a strong economy in Huron, welfare costs continue to drop. The report of the Social Services Committee showed that assistances cost for the year were $476,841 to the end of July 31 compared to a budget of $570,349 and compared to costs of $537,474 last year at the same date, a decrease in costs of 11.28 per cent. Statistics also showed a drop of 20.14 per cent in the number of beneficiaries for the first six months of 1988 compared to last year. The July unemployment rate in Huron was 3.1 per cent. The Board of Health will lease 1200 square feet of a new building being constructed in Clinton for the Huron Addiction Assessment and Referral Program. The lease will be at a cost of $8.50 per square foot per year for the first five years with a tax and maintenance charge of $3.90 per year to be negotiated as costs increase. Diane Petrie has been hired as Director of Nursing for the county at a salary of $41,990. The county had originally offered her the position at a salary of $39,754 but she had said she was not interested for under $42,000 per year. ***** The hourly rate for Homemaking for 1988/89 of $8.64 per hour, a 4.5 per cent increase has been approv ed by the Ministry of Health. The rate has been applied retroactive to April 1. The Home Care Program’s total cost for the year ending March 31 was $1,247,252 compared to its budget of $1,293,184 while the Integrated Homemaker Program cost was $1,127,249 compared to its budget of $1,093,504. ***** Mobile shelving for the archives room at the Huron County Pioneer Museum has been ordered at a cost of $23,000. The shelving will enable much more to be stored in the room that would be the case with normal shelving. Half the cost will be provided under a govern ment grant. The Huron County Historical Society made a donation of $30,000 to assist with this and other furnishings for the archives. Renovations to the 1856 school house, the original part of the Pioneer Museum continue with most of the work expected to be completed in October. The museum has received the H. S. Turner Collection of military cap badges which Museum Director Claus Breede calls a collection of national significance containing 5,000 Canadian badges, collar dogs and buttons. The collection, transferred to the museum from the University of Western Ontario is on loanatpresentbut is expected to be given permanently to the Huron museum. Work on the military gallery is nearly complete and construction is u nderway for the agricultural gallery. Three storefronts remov ed from buildings being demolish ed! n Wroxeter will join the old Queen’s Hotel front from Brussels and lumber from the former Wingham Fire Hall to form the streetscape for the History Hall, the main exhibit hall in the museum. Three more fronts still have to be developed. 4c 4c 4c The report of Huron County’s agricultural inventory presented to the Agriculture and Property Committee showed Huron ranks first in the province in the value of agricultural products sold, in most improved farmland and largest farming area and in largest number of census farms.
