The, additional space will allow three more, trainees to take advan- tage of the programs offered at the work Two. programs are available at the workshop; a living skills program which is taught in the original classrootn and the work and training program which has moved into the new mobile unit. pefore the new building was available, there were '12 trainees in the programs under the supervision of Workshop mane ..-a'ger-eontrie---,:tatniesorrand • - - instructor Theresa - Millen. Since the move to the new building, Chris Dickson has joined the staff as the work and. training director. The trainees who 'are participating in the work and, training program, raise money for the workshop through various jobs; raking lawns, domestic cleaning, reivebbing lawn chairs, small factory jabs and contract work for local businest and industry.' The trainees are paid for their work and while it, is a small amount, it is spending money. These jobs also raise oney for the workshop which is only f ded 80 per cent by the government. The dditional money 'to meet costs is funded through the jobs done by the trainees and the Wingham and DistriefAssociation for the Mentally Handicapped. The trainees hold a Christmas Craft and Bake Sale each year to, raise money for the workshop. Last year this sale raised $1,100 for the workshop and all of the crafts and baked goods were made' by the trainees. This year the sale is being held on December 6 at the Wingham Town Hall from 12.30 noon until 4 p.m. The new building permits the work- shop programs to operate more efficiently says workshop manager, Connie Jamie- son. The two programs were operating in cramped quarters in the one now, the two programs can he' separated and each can expand to suit the needs of the trainees. - Connie would like to see a group home established in Wingharn. Several trainees who are, living with their- parents would benefit-from-stieh--a-progrant-but-Ahe program would have to; be supervised at all times, At present,. two trainees who are brcithers, are sharing ari apartment and they are being supervised 'hy their mother. Connie says. they are enjoying their independenee and, the opportunity is working well for them, Speech and community awareness are being stressed intheliving Skills-progrant - under the direction of, Theresa Millen. Community awareness workS on two levels.- Walks downtown, a trip grocery shopping or innch cut at a restaurant creates an awareness of the outside 'community For the trainees and teaches them hoW they can participate in com- munity life. Their ventures into -the community also raise the public'a aware- ness of the workshop's Programs? and the contribution the trainees can make to society. • The living skills program teaches personal hygiene, physical fitness, living skills such as cooking, laundry and cleaning, and education including print-. ing one's name, learning the alphabet and speech. The .cooking program for example includes simple things like learning to boil an 'egg and the more complicated preparation of a meal from planning the menu to shopping, for the groceries, to cooking and serving the food. The workshop also' has a daily recreation( period-Wh-efahe trainees go for walks, play ball; play bing2 and go bowling.. The workshop is presently looking for volunteers to assist with the living skills program.
