Former chief paSsee
On ThUrsday of la•st
'19S9,
Gordon Scott of Ripley
died in Kincardine
Diatrict Hospital. The
funeral service, in the
Mac Kenzie-McCreatb
Home in Ripley was held
last Saturday afternoon
with Rev, Jim Bushell of
St. Andrew's United
Church officiating.

Tiffin's Cemetery at
Langside,. Gordon was
born in Lanzside on .
November 23, 1908.
Sympathy is extended to
his wife, the former Vera
Hill, at this time Of
bereavement. Gordon
was well known over an
extended, area around
here. For many years he
was the chief . of the
Ripley Fire Department
and back then Ripley
answered calls far and
wide around here. We
understand that Gordon
came to Ripley from
Langside back in the
winter of 1926 and that he
was just ,here a month
when he joined the fire
department and served
on it until recently - well
over 50 . years. He was
Ripley's last blacksmith
operating the- shop now
used by• Ppllock Electric
as a storage warehouse.
Gordon will be missed in
the Ripley area.
Ammonia spill
Around three or shortly
after that last Friday
afternoon was the time of
along Ripley's Queen
Street from east to west.
Everyone outside_was
soon coughing and
choking as they breathed
the fumes. However it did
not last long as those soft
southern breezes blew ,it
away 7 process of dif-
fusion. It seems that a
tank loaded with corn
silage activator liquid
starting from Holyrood•
was, leaking. As a result
the north half of the
pavement was covered
with this wet . streak. An ,
O.P.P. cruiser was down
and the officer viewed the
situation.
Soon village foreman
Donnie Peterbaugh ;and
Harvey Pollock, both
members of the Ripley
Firemen had the red
water tank frock out of
the fir ehall. With Donnie
driving the truck and
Harvey walking behind
holding the hose the
pavement was sprayed,
washing away the sticky
wet streak, At least two
tanks of water were used
to wash the pavement
from • the east end of
Ripley to the west end..
ThiS liquid contained
molasses as well as
ammonia and water and
app.arently is used to
make the, chopped corn
into better ensilage.
normal; Now everyone in
the 'Ripley area is hoping,
that the nice sunny
