Sept. 27 is the 1980 fall fair time and a. lot of work and planning goes m. It started on Monday evening when the work bee was held. On Tuesday afternoon the ladies were here. Today (Wed- nesday) the boys and girls from the Ripley Huron Central' SchooLand the Ripley District-school will be putting their exhibits in the Complex. These will be judged on Thursday afterneon "and the teachers on the two committees, one for each school, with help, will be setting up thedisplays in the evening. On Friday morning the exhibitors in the inside :lasses will be busy. Tudging will be during ,he afternoon. The iisplay will be open from 3 to 10 p.m. for public iiew. Then on Saturday it is ley Fall Fair h a dance in the .7omplex. Among the new :hings this year will be a Morse Pulling Corn- )etition on Friday night, different midway, and n the parade Principal 3eOrge Armstrong of the Ripley Huron Central school announces that the Jirls and boys of the :chool will be marching his year for the first time n several years. There will be a goat show--and—:John Farrell +till demonstrate sheep ;hearing. Do hot forget. to 'isit the basement of the Iu . -ron Township Hall for he big poultry show. Remember around the -efreshment booths that he sweet pop attracts the cornets and there are ?lenty of them around ;his year. EverSfone fears heir stings but do not ;wat at them as this in- nriates them. Girls and toys will have their frog umping contest. There viii be wrist wrestling :ompetitions and many ether attractions. The funeral service, in the Mac Kenzie-McCreatb Home in Ripley was held last Saturday afternoon with Rev, Jim Bushell of St. Andrew's United Church officiating. Interment followed in Tiffin's Cemetery at Langside,. Gordon was born in Lanzside on . November 23, 1908. Sympathy is extended to his wife, the former Vera Hill, at this time Of bereavement. Gordon was well known over an extended, area around here. For many years he was the chief . of the Ripley Fire Department and back then Ripley answered calls far and wide around here. We understand that Gordon came to Ripley from Langside back in the winter of 1926 and that he was just ,here a month when he joined the fire department and served on it until recently - well over 50 . years. He was Ripley's last blacksmith operating the- shop now used by• Ppllock Electric as a storage warehouse. Gordon will be missed in the Ripley area. Ammonia spill Around three or shortly after that last Friday afternoon was the time of along Ripley's Queen Street from east to west. With Donnie driving the truck and Harvey walking behind holding the hose the pavement was sprayed, washing away the sticky wet streak, At least two tanks of water were used to wash the pavement from • the east end of Ripley to the west end.. ThiS liquid contained molasses as well as ammonia and water and app.arently is used to make the, chopped corn into better ensilage. normal; Now everyone in the 'Ripley area is hoping, that the nice sunny weather with those soft southern breezes Will be around this Saturday. Special show On Monday three cars with 15 members of the -`Ripley Women's Institute visited Pinecrest Manor Nursing Home in Lucknow. They presented a program for the residents, with Grace Peet of Ripley in charge. They presented those whose birthdays were in Septeniber with a remembrance card. Among these were. Bill . Steer of Ripley and Jim Smith formerly of•the 8th concession between' Ripley' and Pine River. The Nursing Home Turn to page 17• Car on fire Around two on Monday tfternoon of last week the are whistle sounded in Ripley.. The fire was in the stationwagon on the iriveway at the home of Mrs. Donalda McLean on main street south in Ripley. Her father, Walter Thompson, age 85 years, was sitting in the car when it caught fire. His granddaughter Betty Jean McLean got him out and smothered his burning clothes with a blanket. He was taken by ambulance to Wirigharn )istrict Hospital for :rear:tent of the burns suffered to his thigh, irm, and 'head.
