Nadine Carroll of Stockport, England has been observing the general practices of Lucknow's
three doctors for the past three weeks. A medical student at the Liverpool University she is
entering her fifth year of medical school. When she graduates, she will do an intern year and
then plans to take a three year course to qualify as a general practitioner. She wants to be a
GP because it will permit a doser contact with her patients. . [Sentinel Staff Photo]
An English medical student who,is observ-
ing at the Lucknow MedicacCentre for three
weeks wants to be a general practitioner
- bemuse it will pei wit closer-contact-with her
patients.
Nadine Carroll of Stockport, England is
beginning her fifth year of medicine at the
Liverpool University Medical School. She
chose to study general practice during an
elective period this summer and through the
University Of Western Ontario School of
Medicine she has been observing the
general practices of Lucknow's three doctors
at the Lucknow Medical Centre.
Nadine says it is difficult to compare the
English practice of medicine with Ontario
medicine because she is only familiar with
urbari practices in England and here she has
been observing a rural practice. The doctors
at Wingham and DiStrict Hospital have
much closer contact with their patients than
urban doctors do, in England. She believes
the- same-is-true-here when -a patientis
admitted to a city hospital. The local doctor
allows a specialist to take charge of the
patient's treatment.
Nadine likes the close contact with
patients a rural general practice permits and
she hopes to join a general practice when she
finishes school.
Following her final year at medical school
she will do a houge year which is similar to
Canada in doctors' intern year. She then
plans to do a three year course specializing
in general practice medicine. •
Prom second year of medical school on,
study is mainly practical experience hospital
based, although the students take associated
university courses in the mornings and write
university examinations. The medical pro-
gram here is not as closely associated with a
university and the students are permitted to
choose their speciality in their final year of
medical school.
When she becomes a OP,. Nadine wants to
travel and hopes to practice in. Canada or
New Zealand for one or two years. She feels
medicine is a career which will offer many
opportunities and she has wanted to become
a doctor since she was 10 years old. She has
always been interested in science and
medicine is an extension of that interest
which also offers ' a human aspect. She
doesn't think she could work in a laboratory,
she enjoys the patients too much.
As well as the patient contact a general
practice allows, general practice is also a
broader based practice. One patient will
require treatment for a fracture and the next
patient may be an obstetrics patient. She
likes the variety of treatment involved in
general practice.
Nadine is entering a profession whose
numbers are mostly men, but she says there "
is no positive discrimination against women
persuing a career in medicine. Twenty per
cent'of her medical school class are women.
The difference for women in medicine is the
same for, women in any profession, they
must make choices concerning their career
and family life. If a woman plans to
specialize after medical school she could be
almost 30 before she would want to consider
taking time off for a maternity leave. Nadine
feels , professional women must make choices
and compromises their male counterparts
are not asked to make, because of their role
in the family as child-bearer. '
Nadine will be in Canada for three weeks;
and so far, has really enjoyed her stay. She
has seen some of the Muskoka area and
finds Canada a beautiful country. She
doesn't like the humidity of the past few
weeks, however. Manchester is wet but
there is no humidity she says. People have
been very friendly ,and interested in her and
she has been invited to dinner almost every
evening since her arrival. Her weekends
have also been active including contact with
other medical students,
She believes the opportunity to come to
Canada to observe a medical practice here is
a rewarding • experience and she looks
forward to perhaps returning to practice
medicine here herself in a few years.
