CARNE, PASTOR THE MISSIONARY CHURCH, AUBURN One expects to find children in Sunday School and Kids’ Klubs, but a prayer meeting? ... and an adult prayer meeting at that? Last week they outnumbered almost, the adults. They not only came but some of them prayed, out loud, in front of everybody. The difference between prayer meeting these days and our usual Wednesday night meeting for prayer and Bible study is that school is out, allowing whole families to attend. I commend those parents who attend faithfully the prayer meet ing all year round, thereby setting an exemplary pattern for their children, and who take seriously the vows made at the time of their children’s dedication to the Lord Jesus Christ, to “train up a child in the way he should go.’’ A parent who is not dedicated sufficiently to Christ so as to attend the service of his church, to accompany his children to Sunday School, to read to them from the Bible and to pray regularly with them, can hardly be said to discharge the vows that he made before God and the Church when he dedicated his children to the Lord. The Bible exhorts us to ‘ ‘tell it to the generation following.” Inter cessory prayer is becoming a lost art. It is rare enough for adults to be able to pray unselfconsciously in public. How will parents pass on to their children a practice that is all but foreign to themselves? I know some parents who are communicating effectively to their children this important matter of seeking the face of God. It is significant to me that when the children prayed in the previous two meetings they prayed in behalf of others and not of themselves. The “prayer-warriors” of a previous generation are a vanish ing breed. How reassuring it is that, here and there across the country, children are rising up in the place of their elders and are “standing in the gap” in the tradition of Moses and the pro phets who brought God to men and men to God.
