The Citizen, 1988-05-03, Page 6PAGE 6. THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, MAY 3, 1988. Max Oldfield honoured by MNR for service Max Oldfield of Brussels, pro prietor of Oldfield’s Hardware, was honoured last Tuesday when the Ministry of Natural Resources presented him with a certificate of appreciation for 25 years of “outstanding service as an issuer of sport fishing and hunting licences to the people of Ontario. ’ ’ The handsome framed certifi cate was presented to Mr. Oldfield by Ron Spurr of Belgrave supervi sor, Land Planning and Manage ment, of the Wingham District office of the MNR. Signed by Natural Resources Minister Vincent G. Kerrio, Mr. Oldfield’s certificate was one of only three to be presented in Huron for 25 years or more of continuous service to the ministry. Others were presented to Elwin Petrie of Port Albert and to George King of Fordwich. Providing a service to sport fishing and hunting enthusiasts in a province the size of Ontario could present enormous problems were it not for the contribution of people like these,” said Mr. Kerrio. “The many years of dedicated and loyal service in issuing angling and hunting licences have made it possible for the people of Ontario, and millions ofvisitors, toenioy the many recreational opportunities this province is famous for.” Mr. Kerrio added, ‘‘The help provided by these issuers goes far beyond simply selling licences. They have gone out of their way to provide accurate information, ad vice, safety tips, even hints about where the fish are biting, making millions of friends for Ontario over the years. We can all be grateful for the many years of dedicated service by these individuals to the public of Ontario.” Max Oldfield of Brussels, proprietor of Oldfield Hardware, was honoured last week when Ministry of Natural Resources supervisor Ron Spurr presented him with a framed certificate, signed by Natural Resources minister Vince Kerrio, in recognition of his 25 years of issuing sport fishing and hunting licences from his Brussels business location. Imagine getting paid money to do that kind of research, he said. Seems that the survey showed the farther west you go the less likely you are to drink and the less money you have, the more likely you are to go without a drop of booze. “I can understand the money part,’’ he said. “The way the government keeps slapping taxes on booze, only the rich can afford to go out and drink to forget their troubles. But why would people in the west be less likely to drink than people in Ontario, Quebec and the Maritimes.” ‘‘We’re closer to Ottawa and have to listen to Brian Mulroney talk more,” Tim said. ‘ ‘Then how come the Mari timers drink more than Ontario,” Ward Black wanted to know. ‘‘Must have something to do with the prevailing winds blowing allthatMulroney baloney down that way,” Tim said. THURSDAY: Julia was saying it’s nice for once to see the post office and the union sticking it to each other for a change instead of us. She was talking about those anti government pamphlets the union wants tomail but the post office refuses to deliver. “I don’t know what all the fuss is,” Billie Bean said. ‘‘The post office should just let them mail the pamphlets. There’s so much junk mail out there people will just throw thenxin the garbage with the other flyers anyway.” “Better still,” said Hank, “let them mail them and if they’re anything like the rest of the mail they’ll either get lost altogether or they’ll be so late they won’t get delivered until after the next election anyway.” FRIDAY: Ward was helping Billie with some business suggestions this morning. Billie is always scheming how to get more busi ness into town, figuring on conven tions and such. Ward suggested he start small. “Have a convention of all the supporters of John Turner in the Liberal caucus, ’ ’ he suggested. “You can have it in the telephone booth down by the town hall.” Letter to the editor THE EDITOR, I was pleased to learn recently that you received some well deserved recognition from the Ontario Community Newspapers’ Association for the excellent job you are doing with The Citizen.
