Blyth Atoms eliminate Mitchell, lead Clinton series BY RUSTY BLADES The Blyth Atoms eliminated Mitchell from further play off competition last Tuesday, March 15 as they travelled to Mitchell and won another heart stopper 2 -1. The goaltending was exception al as they proved that hot goaltending is essential for playoff success. Michael Bromley opened the scoring in the first period for Blyth on an unassisted rush. His wicked shot was juggled by the Mitchell goalie as the puck bounc ed out of his glove and into the net. Mitchell tied the score early in the second period but it was the only puck that would cross Blyth’s goal line. It was Michael Bromley who again came through in the crunch as he notched the winner later in the period. Ryan Chamney fed Michael the puck and he raced the Atom 'B' lose in Wallace tournament On Saturday, March 19the Blyth Atom B team travelled to the Wallace arena to play in a tournament. The first game saw Blyth against a very strong team from Listowel. The first period was scoreless as Josh Yanchus and the Blyth defence played well. Early in the second period Listowel opened the scoring with three quick goals. Late in the period Blyth closed the gap with some fine team passing as Blyth “A” Novice team captured the championship at the Blyth Little Lions Tournament March 12. The two teams battled end to end the rest of the way but clutch goaltending and some lucky breaks gave Blyth an exciting 2-1 win. This win sent the Bly th Atoms into the group championship series against Clinton. The first game of this best three out of five series was played in Clinton last Thursday, March 17. Blyth brought the luck of the Irish with them on this St. Patrick’s Day match up. With names like McNichol, Craig, Leeand O’Brom ley there was no doubt that there were a lot of Irish players on the team. Although they didn't have a Blarney Stone to kiss before the game, they certainly had lots of blarney to listen to before the game as the coaching staff tried to wind the team up. After taking a 5-1 lead, Blyth let Tim Lyons and Wilfred Datema set Shawn Hakkers in to score a goal. Tim Lyons then assisted on a goal by Marc Bricker. Early in the third period Listowel scored once more but Benjie Hakkers assisted by Tim Lyons and David Boonstoppel allowed Blyth to come within a one goal reach of Listowel. A late rally by Blyth didn’t produce any goals but Listowel scored two goals. The final score was Listowel 6, Blyth 3. Clinton tie the game at 5-5 early into the third period before Blyth mounted a goal scoring explosion of their own as they shocked Clinton with a 10-6 win. Every Blyth skater recorded at least one point with Blyth sniper Michael Bromley leading the way with a hat-trick and five assists. Ryan Chamney and Henry Bos each recorded one goal and two assists. Jerrod Button counted two goals while James McNichol added twoassists. Defencemen Jamie Bromley and Peter Craig both camethroughwith one goal and one assist. Brian McNichol count ed the other Blyth goal and Jonathan Collins recorded an assist. This game was a confidence builder for the rest of the series, which continues in Blyth tonight, Wednesday, March 23 and then in The Blyth boys took the loss in stride and came out flying for their second game against St. Marys. Marc Bricker opened the scoring on a fine solo effort. Shortly after, Tim Lyons scored assisted by Marc. St. Marys scored late in the first period and tied the game at two, midway in the second period. In the third period goalie Josh Yanchus proved to be in his best form as he shut out the opposing team. The Clinton on Thursday, March24. Come out and lend your support to these ice gladiators. The Blyth Atoms participated in the Brussels Optimist Atom tourn amentlast Saturday, March 19. They played the first game bright and early Saturday morning against Brussels. The team was still sleepingas the game began and they couldn’t seem to get all the gear's working together as they spun theirwheels until the final buzzer sounded. Brussels scored four goals to defeat Blyth 4-0 and send Blyth into the Consolation round where they played Huron Park in their second game on Saturday afternoon. This dismal day of hockey for the Atoms continued as they lost in a controversial shootout3-2. The first period was scoreless and Blyth went up by a 2-0 count in the second restofthe Blyth teamtook heart from his fine performance and dug deep to put Blyth ahead. Wilfred Datema scored assisted by Joe Fraser. Marc Bricker collected his third point of the game on another solo effort and Scott Arthur scored, assisted by Aaron Sauve. In the third period the Blyth boys seemed to run out of steam and late in the period Fergus managed to put two past the Blyth goalie. The final score was Fergus 5, Blyth 3. This was by far the best team effort for the Blyth boys and it is too bad they had to lose. Next weekend the boys will end their season with a wrap-up tournament for the Huron-Perth Tier II Hockey League. Advertising helps good things happen. frame. Blyth scored a power play goal to open the scoring as Michael Bromley won a face-off in the Huron Park zone. He passed to Ryan Chamney who relayed the disk back to defenceman Peter Craig. Peter’s shot deflected off a Huron Park defender and past the prone goaltender. Sixteen seconds later Michael Bromley made the score2-0ashefoundsome room between the goalie and the goal post. Penalty trouble contributed to Blyth’s demise in the third period as Huron Park scored twopower play goals to tie the game and send it into overtime. The two teams played a five-minute sudden death overtime period that failed to produce the game winner. The next tie breaker consisted of a sudden death shootout, with the game resting on the shoulders of the goaltenders and the shooters. Huron Park scored with their first shooter while Blyth’s couldn’t find the net and Huron Park eliminated Blyth from further tournament competition with this one shot. This no doubt was a tough loss for the Atom ’ s to accept but, in reality, the team didn’t play anywhere near their potential in their two tournament games as they lost to two teams who they have beaten all season long.
