Sometimes you have to look backward to get ahead as Tam mi Medd
proves as she puts the ball over her head and over the net during action
at the Central Huron regional volleyball tournament in Clinton
Saturday. Her Blyth team placed third in girls competition, won by
Hullett Central. Blyth boys finished second to Clinton Christian
School. Hullett boys were sixth.

Team effort leads to tie,
win for Blyth Tykes
Last weekend the Blyth Tykes
travelled to Kurtzville for a
Pre-Novice tournament. Blyth’s
first game was against the home
town of Wallace, the tournament
favourite. This was an exciting,
well-played game with end-to-end
action. The goal tending was
strong at both ends with Michael
Courntey doing a super job for
Blyth. Blyth kept a one-goal lead
most of the game, but Wallace tied
the game with two minutes left.
Blyth narrowly missed the win in
the dying seconds of the game, as
they missed on two good scoring
chances. Both teams were happy
with a tie game, as both teams
showed great effort. The final
score 4-4.
The Blyth team was served lunch
by Wallace Minor Sports. An hour
and a half later they played their
second game of the day. This time
their opposition was Howick. Blyth
started to look tired at this game,
but they skated to a 4-2 win in a
rough game. Scott Bromley did a
fine job in net, and Blyth’s defence
played well against Howick’s
large, fast-skating forwards.
Blyth’s offence was supplied in
both games by Corey Shannon,
Michael Haggitt, Darryl Bromley
and Scott Bromley. Once again a
good team effort. Due to the
weather on Sunday the final game
was cancelled.
Atoms trounce Goderich
on home ice Saturday
On Saturday, February 6 the
Blyth Atoms played host to the
visiting Goderich team. The boys
from both teams played hard with
Blyth scoring the first goal with
only 40 seconds left in the first
period. This goal was scored by
Tim Lyons unassisted.
In the second period Blyth
scored by Scott Arthur assisted by
Wilfred Datema at the 9:08 mark
with Goderich scoring their first
goal with only 27 seconds left in the
second period. This ended the
second period 2 - 1 for Blyth.
Joe Fraser scored the next goal
assisted by Benjie Hakkers and
Brad Walsh. One minute later Tim
Lyons scored assisted by Benjie
Hakkers and Joe Fraser. Goderich
scored with two minutes left in the
game with Blyth winning with a
score of 4-2. The boys played an
excellentgamewithlots of hard
skating and good team play.
'Sparkle' back for Brussels Bulls
BY LOIS Me ARTER
The Brussels Bulls returned to
Seaforth on Tuesday night to play
the Centennaire’s and certainly
didn’t look like the same team that
played on the previous Sunday
afternoon.
The teams had played almost
half the first period before Seaforth
scoredthefirstgoaltotakea 1-0
lead.
The Bulls didn’t score until the
5:34 mark when Tim Fritz scored
from teammates Mike Chapman
and Kevin McArter and then just a
minute and six seconds later the
same line added their second
power play goal when Mike scored
from Kevin and Tim to take the lead
at the end of the first period of play.
The Bulls never looked back as
Tim Dillow scored from Ron
Strome in the first two minutes of
the second period. Mike Chapman
scored at the 15:43 mark from
Fritz and McArter with Steve
Wheeler picking up his first Junior
goal just 13 seconds later from line
mates Tim Dillow and Ron Strome.
Mike Vincent and Tim Dillow
combined for the Bulls fourth goal
of the period giving Brussels a 6-1
lead after 40 minutes of play.
It was 11:41 of the third period
when the Bulls’ Ron Strome scored
from Mike Vincent and Tim Fritz.
Kevin Williamson scored at 10:14
for Seaforth’s second goal of the
game.
Kevin McArter scored unassist
ed at 7:47for Brussels’eighth goal.
He added another a minute later
from teammates Tim Fritz and
Doug Taylor.
In just 25 seconds the Centen-
naires scored their third and final
goal of the game. At 2:19 Tim Fritz
scored from Kevin McArter and
Mike Chapman and in the last
minute of play Ron Strome scored
from Kevin McArter, and Mike
Vincent scored unassisted at the 24
second mark to complete the
scoring and give the Bulls a
resounding 12-3 victory. Jeff Me-"
Gavin went the distance between
the posts with the team looking like
the sparkle had come back.
BEAt MITCHELL 6-3
The Bulls travelled to Mitchell
on Friday night in some rather
blustery weather with only 11
playerson the bench. With only
three defenceman in the lineup
some line adjustments were neces
sary and double shifting was the
name of the game.
The teams had played 13
minutes of the first period when the
Bulls finally scored after playing
short-handed the most of that time
span. Mike Chapman scored on a
pass from Ron Strome and Brian
Campbell to give Brussels a 1-0
lead. There was 2:40 on the clock
when Chapman added his second
goal from Kevin McArter and
Doug Taylor.
There was just 46 seconds
remaining in the period when Tim
Fritz scored from Mike Chapman
to hold a 3-0 lead.
Mitchell came out strong and
scored just 47 seconds into the
second period to finally get on the
scoreboard. Play continued until
the 8:07 mark when Kevin McArter
scored from Tim Fritz. Just three
minutes later Fritz scored from
Mike Chapman to give the Bulls a
5-1 lead. Mitchell added one more
goal before the second period
ended.
Mitchell added their third goal in
the first two minutes of the third
and it looked as if they were on the
comeback trail but goalie Greg
McClement held them off for the
remainder of the game.
Brussels’ Ron Strome added one
more goal at the 1:59 mark from
teammate Stuart Bouman to clinch
the 6-3 victory for the Bulls. The
legs held up well against a full
bench of players on the opposition
side.
The Bulls out-shot the Hawks
37-22. There were no home games
lastweekand willbe none again
this week. The team will be on the
road to complete their regular
schedule before playoffs start.
They will be in Seaforth on Friday
night for an 8:30 start and will
travel to Wellesley on Saturday
night for an 8:30 start as well.
The following weekend will have
playoffs commencing.
