The Citizen, 1988-02-10, Page 2PAGE 2. THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 10, 198*. Friday last chance to support Kevin at Calgary The list of names of well-wishers to goon a telegram to Brussels’ Kevin Wheeler and his partner as they get set to skate in the opening ceremonies of the Calgary Olympic Games on Saturday is growing fast, butthere’s still time to get your name on the list. A telegram of congratulations and good wishes will be sent to Mr. Wheeler and his partner Michelle Menzies of Preston on Friday, the evening before they take part in the gala opening spectacle of the 25th Winter Games. It will include the names of everyone who has signed the lists at various locations around Brussels and Blyth by Friday morning, and will tell the fifth best Senior Pairs figure skaters in Canada how proud we are of them. The list already totals more than 125 names, each of which has paid $1 or more to have his or her name included on the telegram. Any money left over will be sent in trust Senior Pairs figure skaters Kevin Wheeler of RR 5, Brussels [far right] and his partner Michelle Menzies of Preston combined with Melanie Gaylor of Stratford and Lee Barkell of Kirkland Lake to win the Silver Medal In the “Fours” competition at the Canadian National Figure Skating Championships in Victoria, B.C. on January 23. Local residents are being asked to add their names to a telegram of congratulations to Mr. Wheeler as he joins the other three skaters in the opening ceremonies of the Calgary Olympics on Saturday. -Photo by Shirley Wheeler People Many happy returns to Maggie Rutledge who celebrated her birthday on Monday, February 8. Well, Walton Recreation was praying for snow for the weekend, for their poker rally, but really folks did you have to pray that hard. The Brussels Crusaders held a very successful dance in the Legion on Saturday night. By all reports the hall was full. Everyone is sending their best wishes to Kevin Wheeler and Michelle Menzies who will be in the opening ceremonies of the Olympics. Hopefully, they will show the opening so we can watch them on T.V. You may not be bringing home a gold medal Kevin but as far as the people of Brussels are concerned you have already won it. We are proud of you. Remember readers just $1.00 on a telegram will tell Kevin and Michelle what we think and it may just give them that boost, to make one of their most outstanding performances ever. to the Preston Figure Skating Club to be used toward the couple’s ice time as they continue to train. Under the rules of amateur sport in Canada, money may not go directly to an amateur athlete without jeopardizinghisstandingin the sport. Kevin and Michelle just missed winning a berth on Canada’s Olympic Figure Skating team by placing fifth overall in the Cana dian National Figure Skating Championships in Victoria, B.C. January 20-23; only the top three senior competitors in any section made the 1988 team. However, the pair did make ittothe podium to receive the silver medal in the “Fours” competition in Victoria, skating together with the team of Melanie Gaylor of Stratford and Lee Barkell of Kirkland Lake, who had placed sixth overall in Seniors Pairs competition. Unfortunately, the “Fours” placing does not count toward the overall scoring in the final placings of competition medallists. Lists for names and jars to collect money for the telegram are in Brussels at Oldfield Hardware, the Brussels Hotel, the BMG Arena and The Citizen, and in Blyth at The Citizen office. The Town of Seaforth is also collecting names for a telegram to go to native Lloyd Eislerand his Senior Pairs partner, Isabelle Brasseur of Quebec, who qualified for the Olympic team by taking the silver medal in Victoria. Soc’mon, Brussels, Morris and Grey - let’s show Seaforth that anything they can do, we can do better! Remember, you only have until Friday morning to pledge your support to Kevin - our Olympics 1992 champion!
