Blyth Atoms get
rude surprise
in playoffs
BYRUSTYBLADES
The Blyth Atoms travelled to
Hensail for an exhibition game on
Monday, January 18 where they
completely dominated the home
team and overpowered them by a
9-1 score.
The Atoms opened up a 3-0 first
period lead and increased it to 6-0
after two on their way to victory.
Ryan Chamney finished off a two
on one after defenceman Peter
Craig made a nice rush to open the
scoring. Michael Bromley notched
his first goal of the game after a
passout from behind the net by
Jerrod Button. James McNichol
finished off the first period scoring
as he jumped on a loose puck with
assists from Michael Bromley and
Jerrod Button.
Michael Bromley showed his
unlimited talents in the second
period as he scored all three goals.
Jerrod Button assistedonone goal,
another goal was scored on an
unassisted breakaway, while his
(bird goal was assisted by Jamie
Bromley who made many rushes
from his defence position in the
game.
Brian McNichol opened the third
period highlights thanks to a pass
out from the corner of the rink by
Ryan Chamney. James McNichol
then scored his second goal of the
game on another rebound as
Michael Bromley and Jonathan
Collins assisted on the play.
Hensail finally scored on the
Blyth team but Blyth finished off
the game scoring as James McNi
chol put his new stick to good use as
he recorded Blyth’s second hat
trick of the game. Peter Craig made
another fine rush and James
scored the goal as he tipped in the
goalmouth pass as Blyth won 9-1.
The team had a change of plans
as word came that the first round of
playoffs was to begin. Their
scheduled game against Elma-
Logan on Wednesday, January 20
was cancelled at the first playoff
game against Clifford was played
instead.
LOSE TO CLIFFORD
There was no doubt that these
two teams came to play hockey as
they put on a good show for the
crowd as Clifford shaded Blyth in
overtime 4-3. Blyth started strong
and took a 2-0 first period lead.
Jerrod Button opened the scor
ing as he finished off a fine solo
rush with an unassisted goal. Two
minutes later Michael Bromley
added to the lead as he also
finished off a rink le ngth dash with
an unassisted tally. The two teams
traded end-to-end rushes for the
entire game with the Clifford
goalie and the two Blyth goalies,
Chris Lee and Michael de Jong,
coming upbig each time with some
stellar saves.
Clifford fought back in the
second frame and forged a 2-2 tie
before the period ended. Clifford
took their first lead of the game on a
power play goal one and a half
minutes into the third period but
Blyth continued to press the
Clifford defence. Blyth finally
counted the equalizer with four and
a half minutes left in the game as
Michael Bromley stripped the
Clifford defenceman of the puck,
swept around behind the net and
stuffed the puck home.
Regulation time expired with the
teams tied at three and a 10-minute
overtime period followed.
It was heart stopping action in
the extra session with both teams
having plenty of chances to net the
winner. The game was headed for
an overtime tie as the clock wound
down but the Clifford offence had
other ideas. They scored the
winning goal with only 11 seconds
left on the clock. This was a
devastating way to end the game
but it was a real character builder
as the Blyth Atoms regrouped and
headed to Clifford on Sunday,
January 24 for the second game of
this best of three series.
With one player arriving late and
another player unable toplay at all,
the Atoms started the game on the
wrong skate and their play deter
iorated after that. It was a total
team collapse as Clifford ended
Blyth’s playoff hopes with a
stunning 10-3 victory.
Clifford scored first but Blyth
quickly tied the game. Peter Craig
broke up a Clifford rush and passed
to Christopher Howson. Christo
pher se tup Ryan Chamney who
whistled a shot into the goal.
Clifford took the lead again
before Blyth tied it for the final
time. Ryan Chamney passed the
puck out from behind the Clifford
goal to Michael Bromley who
recorded the power play marker.
Clifford scored two late first period
goals and two more unanswered
goals in the second to take a

It was a race for the puck in front of the Bly th Atoms’ goal with a Blyth defensive player trying to prevent a
good scoring opportunity by Brussels as the two teams met in Brussels Friday night. Blyth took a 10-5
victory home with them.
