Beauty may be only skin deep,
but ,until we can find a way to ad-
mire people for the shape of their
liVer or the pristine glory of their
lungs, skin serves as an indicator of
health status, • and a prime source
of health concern._
The skin is more than just clever
packaging designed to .stop every-
thing else we're made up of from,
flopping out. It's a complex organ
that regulates 'body heat, allows
moisture to exit, and serves as a
barrier between what's outside and
what's inside us.
Mostly, when things go' wrong
with the skin it shows.
Take" acne, for instance. This
bane of the .teen-ager's life is often
an inevitable occurrence. It's usu-
ally a temporary ' condition, but,
nonetheless, annoying..
Acne can be alleviated, though,
by good skin hygiene, and by stick-
ing to a sensible, balanced diet. If
the condition persists, it may be
advisable to see a skin specialist
and follow the doctor's instructions.
Psoriasis is also a 'common skin
disorder and one that can affect any
age group. This itchy, flaky' afflic-
(ion occurs in about one person in
a hundred, and dermatologists be-
lieve that this disease, which affects
otherwise healthy people, is mainly
inherited.
If you think you may have psori-
asis, you'd do well, to consult your
doctor, rather ,than. placing undue
faith in the numerous over-the-
counter preparations frequently ad-
vertised on television.
Many people like 16 refer to
minor skin prOblems with the
grander-sounding name of derma-
titis. That may be a rash diagnosis,
since dermatitis can cover a multi-
tude of sins, and is simply an in-
flammation or irritation of the skin.
It's important to remember, that
Our skin can behave or respond
only in a limited way; so it makes
sense , to find out about underlying
"causes" of persistent skin problems.
As a general rule, 'good nutrition,
adequate sleep, relaxation, fresh air
and hygiene will, all do your skin a
power of good, although too much
exposure to sunlight can be harmful.
Everybody gets skin ailments at
some time or another, and often,
time is the great healer. For exam-
ple, piinples and blackheads should
be allowed to ' run their course
rather than being for'ced off the
scene by 'picking and scratching.
But, if problems persist or repeat
or worsen, go and see your dockir.
It's no-skin off your nose.
