WHIT.ECHURCH NEWS
The second meeting of White-
church 4,-H club was held on
Monday evening, September 27 at
7 p.m. in Whitechurch Community
Memorial Hall: The president Lori
Ann Jamieson opened the meeting
with the • 4-H pledge. All 6
members answered the roll call by
exhibiting their pattern and mater-
ial. The minutes of the last
meeting were read by Kathy
Purdon. •
The next meeting will be
Monday evening,. October 4 at the
home of Mrs. Walter Elliott.
The name of the club was voted
on and 'all favoured "VVhitechurch
Sleepy SewerS".
Mrs. Archie. Pardon. had tickets
On the 4-H quilt; "Getting 'ready to
cut the pattern" was discussed by
Mrs. ,Elliott who demonstrated how
to enlarge the shoulder of a
pattern, and to, shorten or lengthen,
the skirt. Mrs. Archie .Purdon
demonstrated "Cutting and mark-
ing and placing pf material". • In
group work the girls placed 'their
material .on a long table, pinning
and laying on the• pattern. They
marked and cut out their garments..
They closed the meeting with the
4-H creed.

Sleepy Sewers
The third meeting of White-
church 4-H Sleepy Sewers was held
Monday evening, October 4 at the,
home of Mrs. Walter Elliott.
The president Lori Ann Jamieson
opened the meeting with the 4-H
pledge. The 6 members answered
the roll call, '"What point to
remember when cutting' the fab-
ric". The next meeting is October
" 11 at Mrs. Archie Purdon's. Wendy
Kay read the minutes.
Mrs. Walter Elliott discussed
grain and staystitching. She
demonstrated plain and French
seams. Mrs. Archie Purdon
discussed gathers and darts and
showed how to sew flat fell seams
and how to top stitch and seams on
rolling knits.
In group work we practised the
seams. We closed the meeting
with repeating the' 441, creed.

FARM REPORT
ONTARIO SHEEP SEMIN
The Ontario Sheep Association,
in conjunction' with the University
of Guelph and the Ontario Ministry
of Agriculture and. Food, are
sponsoring a Sheep Seminar Octob-
er 29 and 30, at the Arboretum
Center. • The sheep seminar
programs are designed to offer the
latest information on sheep .produc-
tion both from a scientific And
practical standpoint.
Th,e program offers a unique'
opportunity for sheep owners to
diseuss matters , of importance to
the sheep industry among each
other and with other ,knowledge-
able people.
All sheep owners in Ontario are
invited to attend.
PROGRAM
FRIDAY - PRODUCTION DAY
Friday morning we will visit a
local commercial farm producing
light lambs for the ethnic trade.
Corn silage is fed in a confinement
system. -
Mr. Trevor Jones, Fairview
College, Fairview, Alberta, will I*
one of the seminar guest speakers.
He has a wide background in sheep
research and in applying research
in a prac:tical way on the farm.
SATURDAY '- PROBLEM •
SOLVING DAY
'A workshop session on Feeding,
Breeding and Health will be
featured. Dr. C. S. Bernard,
Director, Lennoxville Research Sta-.
tion will, be special guest speaker.
He has carried out extensive work
on out-of-season breeding in Queb-
ec. using breeds available locally.

NEW TRAINING SCHOOLS
This fall, two Training Schools
for women are being held in Bruce
County. „ These. Training Schools
work on the principle whereby a
group sends 2 ladies to the 2-day
Training Schools, and these ladle's
then return and pass their newly
learned knowledge on to the rest of
the. group. •
The group' may be a Women's
Institute, Service Club, other
organized group, ,or simply a few
women who all want to learn the
craft involved.' The two Training
Schools are:
NEEDLEPOINT FOR BEGINNERS'
This craft consists of working
with, yarn on a canvas mesh to
create beautiful designs. A
number of different needlepoint
stitches are taught, and designs are
Made. Time is spent on design and
color, with an eye to making
articles which are "uniquely
yotirs".
QUILT
Design and color co-ordination,
as it applies to this ageless art, are
the basis of this, course. , Templates
will be Made from pictures or
miniature patterns,' blocks made
and quilting and finishing discus-
sed.' The time-tested techniques,'
as well as modern equipment and
techniques, will be reviewed.
• These Training Schools are to be
held as followS: Needlepoint -
Hepworth Legion Tuesday and
Wednesday, November 9 and 10.
Quilt - Paisley United. Church,
Thursday. and Friday, November 11
and 12.

An increase in provincial educa-
tion grants could mean about
$240,000 to the Bruce County
Board of Education next year,
board members were told last
week. •
Education director Jack Bowers
said the boatd will receive more
government assistance for trans-
portation and /repaynaent 'of build-
ing debentures under the increased
"extraordinary expenditure
grants".
The grants are part of 9;6 per
cent increase in government educa-
tion assistance over this year.,
Theprovince will give $165
million more to local boards for a
total next year of $1.8 billion. The '
announcement was made to school
board chairman in letters from
Education Minister Tom Wells.
Board accountant John Swerd-
feger said the new regulations
could have helped the board this
year. •
"BaSed on this year's budget,
had these regulations been in
effect, we would have been in a
somewhat 'better position," he
said;
Mr. Swerdfeger estimated the
regulations would have meant
added income to the board of
$50,000' for its elementary School
and $190,000 - for secondary „
schools. The effect next ,'year

ing Lassies was held on Thursday,
October 7 at' the Lucknow Central
Public Schooly
Elizabeth Black opened the
meeting by leading in the 4-H
pledge.. The minutes'of the last
meeting were read' by Elizabeth
Black. The treasurer gave her
report. Achievement Day is' on
November 27 at .Ripley. Books are
to be into the leaders by November

was discussed. Suggestions were
given for a skit for Achievement
Day.
Mrs. Ritchie demonstrated how
to do a button with thread shank.
Mrs. Ritchie read about facings.
All of the girls worked on their
garments. We closed by repeating
the 4-H creed.
