Plan Canvass
For September
The Lucknow Branch of the
Canadian Arthritis Society met at
the home. of Mrs. Alex Andrew on
September 2 to plan their annual ri
canvass in the Lucknow area.
A letter of, thanks from the
Kitchener Field Office was read,
congratulating the Branch on their
excellent achievement of last year's
campaign, which was a' 74%
increase over the year before.
The- seven members present
voted to , have their cafivass from
September 20 to September 25th.

u The Authority has received
Ministry of Natural Resources
apprOval for a $200,009, floodplain
land acquisition prograni in Turn:-
berry Township. The affected 100
acres in the township. have had a
history of flooding problems dating
back to the 1940's 'and 1950's. In
the last three year • the' area , has
suffered through four floods. The
majority of the funds will be
supplied by the Ministry and
supplementary grants, from the
• Province of Ontario. The benefit-
ing municipality will pay 20% while
the entire authority will supply the
remaining 5%.
The program has been establish-
ed to offer landowners • of the
problem area an alternative choice•
of •action. It.. has not been
developed to expropriate the land.
Land appraisal . will establish
guidelines for prices, offered by the
Authority. Initial acquisition
efforts will be centred on 53 acres
that are categorized as severely
flood-prone.
\ Member municipalities border-
ing lake Huron leave been ap-
proached -.for their approvals to
commence an extensive. lakeshore
development study.
The study will' indicate the
causes and extent Of gully 'and
shoreline erosion in the Townships
of Ashfield, Colborne, Goderich
and the town of Goderich. Upon
municipal approval consulting
firms will be .asked to submit
estimated costs for the study. The
study will also result in a master
plan which would ensure safe
development of the area in future.
Engineering representatives are'
presently revising a report for the
reconstruction of the Goriie Dam.
the
studies indicated that
the dam requites facilities to
handle' greater capacity of water.'
Various .'methods of achieving. this
objective are being studied. Final
reports will then be submitted for
approval to the Ministry of Natural
Resources and the Township of
Howick;
,
'Applications for the Atithority's
1977 Tree Planting Assistance
Program have' been submitted to
the Ministry of Natural Resources.
Requests for 42,000 trees have
been ordered for 15 watershed
applicants.
Reports from the Ministry nur-
series indicated that there may be a
-shortage of spruce and red oak for
the next two years.
Visitors to the Falls Reserve
Conservation area are unknowingly
aiding the Authority in deciding
future 'development plans for the
park.
A statistical study presently
being undertaken by Experience
'76 staff will indicate how far
people drive to' stay at the Falls,
what areas and facilities 'they
prefer and what time of year is the
most popiilar for campers.
Ian Deslauriers, the Authority's
Resources Manager recently at-
tended a management seminar in
Barrie, Ontario. The five ' day
seminar, presented • by the Civil
Service 'Commission, 'was attended
by' twenty people representing the
Attorney General's office, Minist-
ries of Housing, Labour, Revenue,
Transportation and Communica-
tions, and. Natural_ Resources..
The program was established to
better equip managers in dealing
with office and administration
matters. '
The Authority has' received a
supply of plicemats for distribu-
tion. In addition to the placemats
that will be sold to, various estab-
lishments in the watershed, the
Authority is offering placernats to
service phibs and non-profit, organ-
izations free of charge.
Maitland Valley recently took
part. in the festiVities celebrating.
Maryborough Township's 125th
anniversary. The Authority receiv-
ed third prize in the open class for
their float entry in the. parade.
The completion of the Author-
ity's Experience '76 program is
August 20. To date, the crews have
completed work • at Galbraith,
Brussels and Fall's Reserve Ganser,
vation ateas. Municipal work has
also been done in Brussels,
Clinton, Elma Twp., Goderich,
doderich Twp., Harriston, Howick,
Twp., Listowel, Maryborough
Twp., Wingham, Lucknow and
East Wawanosh Twp.
The technical staff haVe complet-
ed a wildlife management report
for the Wawariosh Valley Conser-
vation Area, and a preliminary
report concerning the restoration of
the Brussels and Gorrie Mills.
Flight line mapping of aerial
photographs and a base map' for
the expanded watershed have also
been established.

On Saturday evening,' August
28th neighbours and • relatives,
gathered at the St. Helens hall to
honour a September bride, Linda
Mewhinney. • While the ladies
gathered Mrs. 'Bruce Raynard
provided piano melodies. Mrs.
Allan Miller was chairlady for a
short prograM consisting of read
ings by Mrs. Tony McQ.uail, Mrs.
Tom Pritchard and Mrs. Andrew
Gaunt and musical numbers by. •
Barbara Cameron and Mrs. Tom
Pritchard. As a conclusion Mrs.
Bruce Raynard and Mrs. Andrew
Gaunt led a. sing song:
The bride and her sisters Marie
and Kathy Mewhinney took. their
seats 'of honour on the platform.
Mrs: Lorne Forster read an address
of good wishes. Mrs. Bevan
Brown, Mrs. Barry Haldenby and
Mrs. Torn Irwin placed the gifts
and decorated an apron with bow'S..
Linda thanked the ladies for their
gifts and those who organized the
shower. Punch and fancy cookies
Were served at the conclusion of the
evening.
On Friday, Augtist 27 the
groom's relatives and neighbours
honoured Linda at a shower near
Mount Forest. On Sunday, August
29 Linda' was guest Of honour at
another Shower at Fergus held by .a
cousin of the groom.
Following her marriage Linda
will be living in Stratford.
