tucknow Sentinel,
Lucknow, Ontario
Dear Don, ',
• COMPLIMENT
It has come to my .attention
there have been complaints in The
London Free Press concerning 'the
slow bus' from Lucknow which
arrived late at the ,National
Farmers Union ( U) deirnoristra-
don in Ottawa..
I think it is unfair to the bus
driver, Cecil Garniss from Luck-
now, who did a superb job of
keeping that' bus rolling' on the
road. His only problem was that he
was directed 75 miles out of his way
to pick up people who weren't even
there on time. He waited as much
as. 20 minutes at a place.
I want to also commend the other
driver from our district, Jack Smith
froin Monkton, for the speed with
which he got 'assistance when his
bus temporarily stopped on, High-
way 401.'
I rode 'on both buses, and while
Mr. Smith's was a newer bus and
had the advantage of being able to'
tilt the seats back, we rode all the
way back to Lucknow, direct from
Ottawa, 'on Montgomery's bus,
driven by.Mr. Garniss, and we had
a comfortable ride and made
excellent time.
These people who complained
because they didn't get 'there; on
time should rememlief-the -NFU
executive were still there speaking
on their behalf. But then, these are
the same people who, if you did
give them back half the money they
lost, would still. be grumbling
because you didn't give them 'the
other half.
Our hats .off to Cecil and lack
-they both did a great job.

stagnant and very warm. These
conditions are ideal for the propa-
gation of rot in the timber.
We 'recommend that grilles be
placed in the vertical faces of the
enclosure at both ends and at three
locations in the floor of the
enclosure along • its length. This
will provide adequate air circula-
tion to retard any possible rotting.
STEEL SPLICE PLATES
Many of the steel plates reinforc-
ing the trussed frames inside of the
building .are now rusted, All steel
plates within the building should
be' cleaned of loose rust and
, painted with rust inhibitor paint,
BUILDING EXTERIOR •
No evidence of . any major,
deterioration could be found, but it
was noted that the paint finish 'on
the lower sections of the steel
sheeting, ,has peeled off in many
locations. k
. We•suggest that this be repaint-
ed 'as soon as possible to minimize
rusting. .
On the north face, at the north
east corner, snow clearing equip-
ment has , slightly. damaged ,the
sheeting • and timber stringers
between frames 29 and 31.
At this location, 'the main frames
were' checked' and no damage was
found. We ' suggest that the
sheeting and stringers be replaced.
CONCLUSION
On the basis of the writer's
inspection, little or no significant
structural deterioration has taken
place since the' building was
extensively renovated in 1969.
It is our opinion that the building
can still safely withstand all snow •
and wind loads specified by the
Ontario Building Code and should
'give many more yeat.s of service
providing normal maintenance' is
carried' Ont.
