Take Steps To Question Legal Responsibility
Lucknow Council Continue Opposition
To Maitland Authority Membership
Lorne Murray, chairman and, Ian
Deslauriers, 'managet of the Mait-
land Valley Conservation Mithority
met with LucknoW Village Council
on Tuesday evening of last week to
discuss problems which have risen
'in connection with the village of
Lucknow 'becoming ,,part of the
Maitland. Authority.
Lucknow has become part /of the
enlarged area which comprises the
Lucknow River watershed by virtue
of a vote held among member
municipalities concerned with the
watershed. The municipalities
voted 5-2 in favour, with Lucknow
casting pne the opposition votes .
and. Ashfield the other. In favour
were the Municipalities of East .
Wawanosh, West Wawanosh, Col-
b.orne, Kinloss • and Culroks.
The majority in favour carried
and the entire area became part of
the Authority.
Lucknow Council appears deter-
mined to fight the unwanted
membership which would cost the
village $1736 in 1976, and an
annual fee each year.
In recent issues, the Sentinel has
published the view of the Reeve of
Lucknow (March 24 issue) and the
reply of the Conservation Authority
chairman (April 14). _
The Autherity management stat-
ed that on two earlier. meetings
with Lucknow Council, information
had been provided on the Lucknow
River floodplains. It States that in
June, at an initial , meeting,
Lucknow Council. had specifically
requested information as to what
the author* could 'do for the
village. 'In October, as a, result of
this request, the Authority manag-
ir, Ian Deslauriers, presented a
master plan and mapping of the
Lucknow floodplain for ••coun:cirs
:onsideration. He stated that he'
was not, in a position to" advise, or
'.confirm on definite work which
might be done.
At last week's council meeting,
the. Reeve and Council denied that
they had asked Mr. Deslauriers for
this detailed mapping of the
watershed.
Mr. Deslauriers, visibly angered
by this statement by Council, said
that there was . considerable cost
and much time involved 'in this

Two Holer Goes
Same Year As
Eaton's Catalogue
BY AB WYLDS
Ripley Correspondent
During the nice weather last
week, outdoor spring cleanups
were quite common. The dead
grass, leaves, and other debris
were gathered into a heap and
then sometimes set on fire.
An odd time,, such a fire getting
out of ,control, makes it necessary
to call' the local fire department.
Then it 'makes the news.
On Monday of last week, it was
reported that a cleanup was held at.
the farm of Murray Ferguson, third
farm east of Reid's Corners - the
former Clarence Dunlop farm.
Well, it did not get out of control,'
so there was no call to the Ripley
Fire Department.
• What makes it newsworthy was
that a small wooden, building,
which sat .out in the orchard of
every farm yedrs ago, also burned
up. It was long past its, days- of
active use and was knOwn up and
down the line as the last one on the
concession.
In a way, it is rather a fitting.
'tribute that it went the same year
as Eaton's catalogues. Somebody'
repotted that' this particular one
was a two holer.
