Bruce to resume rabies clinics
The April 1st meeting of St.
Helens Women's' Institute was held
in the hall at 12.30 p.m.,
commencing with a pot luck dinner.
Spring flowers decorated the table
and a delicious dinner was served
by the committee, • Miss Isobel .
Miller, Mrs. Wm. Purdon, Miss
Beatrice McQuillin and Mrs. Gord-
on 'Struthers. At the end of •the
dinner all enjoyed a piece of the
25th wedding anniversary cake
made by Mrs. Ross Garrimie for our.
president, Mrs: Peter Chandler.
The meeting opened with the
Institute Ode followed by the Mary
Stewart Collect. The roll call was
the paying' of membership fees by
23 members. Mrs. Ross Gammie, ,
secretary, read the minutes Of the
March meeting and gave the
treasurer's report. Mrs. Gordon
Struthers gave the assistant treas-
urer's ropory • Correspondence was
. read and busine5S dealt with.
An executive meeting to plan the
District Annual will be held 'in
Belgrave on Monday, Apiil 5th.
The Institute spring banquet will
be held Tuesday, April 6. A
donation of $10.00 was given to
Mental Health.
Cancer canvas's kits were given
out. Group '3 are in charge of the
planning for the May wedding° we
cater to.
The annual meeting then 'Took

year. The clinics had been
held for eight successive
years until droPPq4 In 1975,
but last year's experiente
with the disease in Bruce was
such that the Canada depart-,
ment of agricultive has decid-
ed "the inmiculation of dogs
and cats must be resumed.
Southern. Ontario was the
second worst place in the
world in tables incidence last
year and Bruce had by far the
most 'cases reported of any
county in the province.
There were • 51 persons in
Bruce treated with anti-rabies
serum as result of contact
With rabid animals. Most of
the' people treated were from
farm families and exposure in
most 'cases came from cattle
or horses.
Dr. D. R. Allen of Walker-
ton, director of the Bruce
County Health Unit said, "Our
overall goal is to minimize or.
suppress unnecessary treat-
ment (of humans) since this
in itself is not without haz,
ard."
Many cases require consul-
tation with the family physi- . .
cian as to the advisability of
instituting treatment as rec-
ommended by the Ontario,
minister of health, Dr. Alien
said.

who had spent the winter and is
now returning to her home.
