FARM REPORT "ROUNDUP" A PROMISING NEW HERBICIDE Do you have a . problem with quack grass,-field .bindweed, or. Canada thistle? If so, a recently registered new herbicide , from Monsanto will be 'of interest to you. 'Roundup or glyphosate as it was called during its field trials on. Ontario farms in 1974 and 1975 is effective on a wide range of annual and perennial grasses and broad; leaved weeds.. It will kill • actively growing quack grasi in a matter of days and-it :is^• also effective on a number of deep rooted perennial weeds. • Roundup is applied post emergeneto the leaves of actively growing weeds from where it is readily . translocated to under- ground roots. . Because this herbicide has no soil uptake you can prepare atiseedbed and plant crops within OayS of spraying without 'worrying 'about. residual effects. Grain growers will now be able to clean their- fields of quack grass without going to the corn atrazine routine. initially roundup, has received registration for use in cropping systems., before planting' of barley, oats, wheat, corn and soybeans and in grapes as, a directed spray: It has also been registered for industrial and, non agricultural uses on railways, roadsides, pipelines and storage areas. . The timing of application with respect to weed development is very important with thii herbicide. This will require delaying spraying Until there 'is a high leaf to' root ration' otherwise results may be disappointing. For quack, grass do not spray until 8" high (3-4 leaf stage of 'growth) and allow 5 days after sprayihg before tillage. For weeds 'such as Canada' thistle and field bindweed delay spraying until near the flowering stage and allow 7 days after spraying before tillage. Rainfall withiti six hours of application may .reduce• effective- ness.
