Pork Congress runs up
big profit
The Ontario Pork Congress marked the
end of the 1977 year with a healthy bank
balance of $48,457.28 after what the 1977
Secretary -treasurer called "nothing short
of one hell of a successful pork congress."
Jack Kyle of St. George summed up the
year in the financial report to organizers in
Woodstock on Oct. 4. He said the 1977
event was more profitable than all the
previous three congresses.
Accounting for more than $5000 of the
net profit were two small food booths
operated by women. The women drew
praise from president Doug McLeod of
Embro. Richard Smelski, swine specialist
for the Ministry of Agriculture and food in
Stratford said the organizers should not be
ashamed about making money. His
thoughts were echoed by Jack Underwood,
one of the vice-presidents of the 1977
Congress. "Everyone worked hard and
should not be ashamed of making a profit.
Let's just say well done and keep on
going."
The 1978 congress will be held in
Stratford on June 20-22. Committees will
study possible changes in format for
special days, for breeder and market pigs,
and a possible switch of buildings between
hogs and industrial exhibitors.
Bill Baxter of Springfield was named
new president of the Congress. Richard
Stein of Tavistock and Gerald Hope of
Mossley are vice-presidents. Carl Moore of
Embro was elected recording secretary -

Farmers' Union wants
corn commission
A proposal for a Corn Marketing
Commission has been presented to the
Ontario Government by the National
Farmers' Union.
The proposal was made at a meeting
between Agriculture Minister William
Newman and the NFU corn committee on
Nov. 2.
Joe Casey of Wallacetown who chaired
the five -man committee said the objectives
were to give corn producers a marketing
mechanism that will be able to negotiate
price, terms and conditions under which
the crop will be sold. Presently, he said,
the producer has to take what is offered
because there is no other alternative except
holding the corn on his farm.
One of the NFU proposals is expanding
the jurisdiction of the Canadian Wheat
Board providing a truly national grains
