Ancient Tradition Still Enjoyed by Young and Old The shooting off of fireworkS on special occasions is an ancient cus- torn, The Romans are credited with introducing fireworks into Europe from Inctia and China, ant& by the 15th century, Italians had devised scenic effects by skillfully arranged firing of combustibles. At first, they were used to accom- pany plays and processions, but .31nce the 17th century they've been marking historic events such a's coronations, royal marriages and births, and peace celebrations. Today, we consider our taste for entertainment as fairly sophisti- cated. But we still take a child- like delight in the sizzlb and glitter of rockets against a night sky. Only a few weeks ago, a highlight of the -visit of Queen Elizabeth to :France' was a fireworks extrava- ganza arranged by the city of‘ Paris iri her honor. In Canada, fireworks are such a popular finale to special events that one company alone producds fifty million items a year; The largest user is the Canadian Na- tional .Exhibition held annually in Toronto. Fireworks are called for to celebrate Jean Baptiste Day in Quebec, Guy Fawkes Day, -enthusi- astically recalled in the Maritimes, and even Hallowe'en which British Colombians hail with firecrackers.
