Invontar,-- ily we hark back to our own days and recall the straight-iaced 'teachers of a by -gone era, who believed that ,education consisted of 90 per cent hard and, of course they did have a good point that all too often seems to be nussing in today's educational system. Those who con- teliti that things have gone too far in the other direction could well be right. Be that as it may, there are cer- tain aspects of incuiern methods of schooling which, are a vast improve- ment. Frankly, the current series of music festivals has brought this: point to mind, The other evening as we watched the junior grade youngsters taking part in folk and square (latices we thought of the ease 'with which younger girls and boys mix, without any sign of em- barrassment. These children will grow up completely relaxed in their . social attitudes tothe opposite sex-, completely avoiding the fluster of self-consciousness which all too of- ten characterized the lives of their parents. We can all recall the stem, old - BUILDING PERMITS ARE NECESSARY We can recall, a few months after we moved to Wingham, being pretty cross when we U -ere forced to secure aT bnilding permit from the local building inspector before making an opening in the wall of our plant in which to erect a double door. The case. of course, was an extreme one, and on its merits the town council decided to relax the restrictiOns covering building permits to a cer- tain degree. Since that time, however, we 'have learned the wisdom of the by- lawfor restrictions continued to re- lax. until serious trouble has develop- ed. Now, it seems„ not enough at- tention is paid to the permiCregu.. lation, and as „a result two or three - structures. in towu have been erect- ed, only to be moved later. ' As a to'wn grows, necessary lim- itations must be placed on the posi- tion and type of new buildings and the alterations to existing ones. The safety factor alone is important, for it would be unjust, as an example, to permit one home -owner to erect chimney "which could create a fire hazard for his neighbours. Obvious- ly it is equally necessary to check on the sites for new structures, lest they be placed on town property or aver -the bounda.ry line between lots.. :As a matter of principle we ire opposed to any regulations which tend to interfere with the right of an, individual to mind his own business. In the case of building permits, how- ever., the rights of the public are in - 'Volved as well. The NiVingbam AdvanceTimes Pt&bne t Wingham, Ontario Wenger Brothers. Publishers, W. Remem- ber the storm of investigation and punishment which used to blow up if one of the senior girls was found wearing a touch of face powder? As a result a boy's first dance (after he filially freed himself from the prison of public school) was a night of self- inflicted torture and he put in two or three miserable years attempting to gain some measure of poise when be wanted to spend an evening with the girl on whom bis affections had fastened. The present attitude of educators acknowledges that boys and girls will soon become men and women and that the two sexes will spend the remainder of their lives in the dos - est possible relationship and mutual interdependence, The modern plan would seem to be vastly -more sen- sible than the one we, have out- grown, CANCER TREATMENT, COMES HOME Last week the Winghain Hos- pital Board approved a plan to °per - ate a '1°11cm-up' cancer clinic on a bi-monthly basis. The arrangement - is in line with the increasing effort to combat this disease at every possible level. It is indeed gratifying to know that right here in Wingham our own hospital -will have a share in one of the most desperate battles mankind has ever waged against his eternal enemy, disease. The never-ending search for a cancer eure is likely to go on for a long time, and there is little evidence that an accident or a miracle will provide the answer to the question of effective treatment. When an ade- qUate control for cancer is finally found it will be as the result of the thousands upon thousands of hours of study which have gone into cancer research and the millions of dollars -which have been provided for the proper technicians and equipment. It is for this reason that the Can- adian Cancer Society was formed and why branches of the organiz- ation 'have been established all across the conritm It has been made perfectly plain to us that we are to have a personal - share in the fight against cancer - indeed, that the final victory in the battle may well depend upon the concentated sup- port of the Canadian public. A branch of the Cancer Society has been established right here „in our midst ,and so far the -co-operation " of the public has been disappointing, perhaps due in part to the instinctive dread with which almost .,everyone approaches the subject ' It is to be hoped that the officers of the local . Unit will continue their efforts, be- cause it is plain that a good deal 6f patient work will be required before there is wholehearted co-operation. The Cancer Society is planning a cln-ve for funds in the near future, and we can think of no appeal in the whole 3 -ear which is more completely deserving of the support of every household in this community.
