ASSISTANCE AVAILABLE
FOR DISABLED PERSONS
It is expected that some 2,000 per-
sons will qualify for the new Disabled
Persons' Allowances as of Septenitier
1st, it was stated by the Honourable
W. A. Goodfellow, Ontario's Minister
of Public Welfare.
"While the legislation was passed
at the last Session of the Legislature
and has only been effective since
July 1st, it is evident that many of
our most seriously disabled persons
will benefit to the extent 'of $40
monthly," Mr, Goodfellow stated.
The Minister added that this legis-
lation, the first of its type in Canada,
is filling a very important gap in the
services being rendered to perma-
nently and totalled disabled persons.
Inasmuch as The Disabled Persons'
Allowances Act is new, the qualific-
ations are restrictive, with the em-
phasis being placed on home care
rather than institutional care.
The major types of disabilities
appear to be paralysis, including
cerebral palsy and polio cases;
mental defectives, arthritics who are
deformed or suffering from osteo-
arthritis, or rheumaticeal arthritis„
neurological diseases, such as multi-
ple and disseminated sclerosis and
Parkinson's disesase. Other per-
sons qualifying are those suffering
from deformities, sevesee heart and
cancer cases.
A feature of the Act is that no
double means test exists, that is to
say, the qualifications of the appli-
cant only are considered, not those
of the immediate members of the
family. Single disabled persons may
