HIGHLIGHTS
from the
HIGH SCHOOL
Basketball
by John Hanna
On Wednesday night the W.D.H.S,
basketball teams travelled to Walker-
ton to meet the Walkerton Collegiate
.teams in an exhibition doubleheader
at the new Walkerton District High
School.
The beautiful gymnasium and spac-
ious school however did not awe the
girls or the boys as the Wingham
girls downed Walkerton girls 18-8
and in the fast moving second game
the senior boys defeated the Walker-
ton seniors 48-34, This game was ably
refereed by Messrs. Martin and Jack-
son.
Everyone was driving hard in both
games and with lots of practice the
teams will likely develop into con-
tenders for H.S.S.A. honours, High
scorer in the boys' game was Saxton
with 12 points closely followed by
Hanna with 10 points, Cameron with
8 ,Murray with 7, Stainton and Lane
with 4 each and Lancaster with 2.
The Senior Boys are coached by Mr.
Higenell and the Juniors by Mr.
Martin, The girls are coached by
Mrs. Williams.

people are now in the drover business
as it is considered much better than
the poultry business at the present
time.
Cattle rustling in the past has been
considered a very serious crime, in
many recent cases the sentence handed
out has shown that some leniency has
been given to people who have teen
apprehended in the act of stealing
from unprotected farms. If farmers
are going to have to lock their cattle
barns and road gates every night it
will eventually lead to increased costs
to the consumer.

When Mr. Knight received his pay
envelope, he extracted the cheque and
held the envelope up for the class to
..,see. "What is this, and what did it
contain?" he asked by way of a
general knowledge test, "A pay
envelope ,sir. It contained your
cheque, one boy replied. "And now
has anyone any questions?" Mr,
Knight asked. "Please teacher", said
another boy, "Who do you, work for?"
And then when Mr. Martin asked
what Canada was doing to check in-
flation, one Grade 10 pupil wrote:
"The Government is examing all im-
migrants coming off the boats from
Europe to make sure they haven't
inflation."
Things like this make teachers de-
spair, but they were really tearing
their hair when the statisticians
made this report, "You can send a
message around the world in seven
seconds, but it takes years to force
a simple idea through one-quarter
inch of human skull."
CATTLE RUSTLERS ACTIVE
Cattle rustling has started up again
in Huron County This time during
the months when cattle are stabled
for winter according to Gordon Grieg
of the Huron County Federation of
Agriculture.
Reports would indicate that farmers
are not reporting thefts promptly and
in some cases not reporting thefts at
all. We cannot be critical of our police
authorities if we do not give them a
fair chance by reporting missing ani-
mals as soon as discovered. Perhaps
the night patrol of the Provincial Pol-
ice could do a lot to check these thefts
if they would check on some of the
pick-up trucks that travel the roads
at very unusual hours.
We have heard of several such c ases
where trucks were chased from farm-
yards where poultry flocks were out
on range. Perhaps these unscrupulous
