Cocktail Hour” takes place during
the family’s own cocktail hour,
which is when the play we see on
stage also takes place.
Reactions of various members of
the family range from shock to
disappointment their part in the
play isn’t larger. Father Bradley
(William Hutt) is shocked and
offers to pay the son not to parade
the family in front of strangers.
Mother Ann (Martha Henry) feels
it’s alright for John to write about
the family but only if it’s in a novel
because novels aren’t as “noisy”
as plays. Sister Nina (Kate Trotter)
sees she plays only a small part in
the script and laments that she has
never been considered important in
the family.
The cocktail hour this evening
drags on because a cook who has
been brought in especially for the
evening, is bungling her way
through the kitchen and as the
members of the family drink more,
they say more about their real
feelings.

Laughter served for ‘Cocktail Hour’
BY KEITH ROULSTON
To describe “The Cocktail
Hour” that opened at the Grand
Theatre in London Friday night,
you might borrow from a cocktail
recipe: take a witty script filled
with moments that are sometimes
bitter and sometimes sweet, add
four fabulous performances and
shake well and you’ve got a play
with plenty of punch.
The Cocktail Hour is one of those
plays that surprises you with its
success. With only four characters
and one set you keep thinking that
even if you’ve liked what you’ve
seen so far, you’re likely to find
boredom just around the comer but
playwright A. R. Gurney, aided by
superb performances from the cast,
never lets the boredom set in.
Instead the time speeds by and the
play is over before you know it.
The play is about a middle-aged
playwright John, (Peter Hutt) who
has returned to his home in an
upstate New York city to tell his
family his newest play is based on
them. The play, also called “The
ers around the stage as the father
who wonders why his son has to
carry on such a silly “hobby” as
playwrighting when he has a
perfectly good job in publishing.
He worries about his way of life
being ridiculed in the play.
