Crusaders split opening games lhe Brussels Crusaders began their season Oct. 19 when they travelled to Palmerston to play the 81’s. There were two goals scored in the first period both of them by Palmerston to give them a 2-0 lead after one period of play. The second period was three minutes old when the Crusaders cut the lead to one when Dave Wheeler scored on a play set up by Brian Campbell and Dave Mont­ gomery. Palmerston regained their two-goal lead five minutes later. Brussels cut the lead to one less than a minute later when Brian Campbell scored on a pass from David Wheeler. The 81's however scored again before the period was over to regain their two-goal lead. That was as close as the Crusa­ ders got as Palmerston added two more goals in the third period to make the final score 6-2 in their favour. The Crusaders played their second game of the season and first at home on Saturday when they played host to the Monkton Wild­ cats. The first period was seven and a half minutes old when Ken Higgins scored on a shot from the point with Jeff Spenser and Ken Cousins drawing assists on the play. They added to their lead just 30 seconds later when Rob Cardiff scored an unassisted goal. Five minutes had passed before Brussels scored again with Dave Wheeler and Jason Goodall combined to set up Kevin Deitner for the goal. It was Goodall’s turn three and a half minutes later when he scored on a play from Deitner and Higgins. Brussels added another goal before the period ended when Mark leading by a 5-0 score. The second period began the way the first ended with Brussels adding to their lead when Jamie Robinson set up Goodall for his second of the game. Cousins and Dave Stephenson then worked together to set up Mark Harding for his second of the game. It became an eight goal lead when Dave Harding set up Brian Camp­ bell for the score. Deitner then added his second of the game when he scored on a pass from Wheeler. Two minutes later Cousins and Mark Harding combined to set up Stephenson for his first of the game. Just over a minute later Deitner completed his hat-trick with Wheeler and Dave Harding drawing assists on the play. The second period scoring was com­ pleted when Dave Montgomery scored on a set up from Brian Ten Pas and Brian Campbell. The second period ended with Brussels leading 12-0. The third period scoring open after six minutes of play when Montgomery got his second of the game with Espensen drawing the lone assist. It was just minutes later when Deitner and Robinson combined to set up Goodall for his third goal and hat-trick in the game. Espensen then added a goal of his own when he scored an unassisted marker. Dave Harding rounded off the scoring when he finished off a set up from Goodall and Deitner. The final score of the game was 16-0 in favour of the Crusaders. Goaltender Ron Smith had several shots directed his way as he shutout for the team. The Crusaders’ next action will be on Friday, Nov. 2 when they travel to Arthur for an 8:30 game. Then Saturday the Tavistock Harding scored on a set up by Royals will be in town for a game Cardiff and Cousins. The first period ended with the Crusaders with the home town boys. The Brussels Sprouts started their season off with a bang. Ian Thompson scored on a pass from Andy Vanbeek. Nolan Krotz scored his first of three goals on a pass from Chris Coulter. Then it was Steven Todd’s turn as he scored on a pass from Ian Thompson. Nolan Krotz scored on a nice pass from Robbie Kerr. • Hensail finally got on the board as Kevin Dikins scored an unassisted goal. However, Andy Vanbeek got that goal back. Nolan Krotz completed the hat-trick on a pass from Steven Todd and Chris Blake. Darrell Weiss scored Hensall’s last goal. Andy Vanbeek scored Brussels’ final goal. The Crusaders scored five first period goals, one by Deitner, to cruise to a 16-0 win. Sports Bulls shutout Patriots, LIFT YOUR SPIRITS ALL OCCASION hammer Blackhawks The Brussels Bulls travelled to Mt. Forest Friday night where they out shot the Patriots 57-17 as Jeff Roy recorded a shut-out. There was no scoring in the first two periods as the Mt. Forest goalie stoned Bulls’ shooters. How­ ever Steve Fritz scored a power­ play goal on a pass from Jeff McKee and Bevin Flett at the 1:50 mark of the third. Brian Zabel scored two minutes later with assists going to Paul Brophy at 3:04. Marty Rutledge scored his seventh goal of the year on a pass from Bevin Flett and Brett Long at 8:31. Jason Baier skated out of the penalty box to receive a breakaway pass from Paul Brophy and Craig King at 14:26. Jeff Roy turned aside 17 shots on his way to his first shut-out of the year and a 4-0 win, by far one of the best games the Bulls have played this year. On Sunday Walkerton Black­ hawks skated in to town to face a Bulls’ scoring attack in the first period as Brussels out-scored Walkerton 10-0 after 20 minutes. Brett Long started the scoring parade 21 seconds into the game with assists going to Marty Rut­ ledge and Joe Walker. Ten seconds later Ron Strome bulged the nett­ ing on a pass from Rutledge and Long. Corey McKee scored at 18:46 from Steve Michie and Bevin Flett. The onslaught continued as Brett Martin scored on a pass from Craig King and Paul Brophy at 17:27. Brett Long scored his second goal of the game at 10:37 from Steve Vandendool and Ron Strome. Steve Fritz scored two goals in a span of 18 seconds with assists going to Steve Michie, Jeff McKee and Corey McKee. Ron Strome notched his second goal of the game from Marty Rutledge and Brett Long at 5:37. At 5:10 Jeff McKee scored from Fritz and Corey McKee. The final goal of the first period came off the stick of Brian Zabel from Jason Baier and Brett Martin at 3:58. The second period looked as if both teams had changed uniforms as Walkerton outshot the Bulls 14-4 outscoring the Bulls 3-1. The Bulls’ Shawn Chipchkse scored a short- handed goal at 13:14. Jeff Morrison scored a power-play goal for the Blackhawks at 7:50 from Mark McBride and John Bacon to break Scott Thede’s shutout bid. At 4:12 John Bujold scored from Pat Don­ nelly and Greg Patterson. Walker­ ton finished out the scoring in the second as Kevin Ball scored on a pass from John Bacon and Jeff Morrison at 2:56. In the third Kevin Ball scored his second of the game with assists going to John Bacon and Jeff Morrison at 12:54. Walk­ erton scored their third power-play goal of the game at 11:17 as Greg Patterson scored from John Bujold and Pat Donnelly. The Bulls got one back at 7:27 as Marty Rutledge scored from Joe Walker and Brett Long. Brian Zabel rounded out the scoring on a pass from Brett Martin and Pauli Brophy with 10 seconds remaining in the game. The final score was Brussels 13, Walkerton 5. The Bulls remain in top spot, one point ahead of Hanover. This week Friday night Brussels travels to Hanover for a rematch of last Sunday’s game. Sunday the Fergus Devils invade Brussels. Sunday’s game will be Hat Day when the first 100 fans will receive a free neon Bulls’ hat.
