COMPUTERS
by Mike Luna
On Thursday, Mr. Shillinglaw
came to demonstrate how a busi
nessman uses computers to control
and record his budget. This was a
part of Mrs. Gingerich’s computer
program. Some of the grade seven
and eight students are participat
ing in Stage 2 of computers.
If you noticed problesm with the
Icons it was because of last
Thursday’s lightning storm. The
lightning messed up our fileserver,
but it’s all cleared up now.
CROSS COUNTRY
The area cross country meet was
held at Hullett Central P.S. Huron
Centennial came in first overall and
Hullett came in a close second.
Congratulations to our cross
country team who did so well. We
won two team championships, Mid
get Girls and Intermediate Boys.
We also had one individual cham
pion, Amanda Anderson. In addi
tion, we had many other fine
performances. These runners plac
ed well in their races. In each race
there were about 40 runners.
Second, Amy Jenkins, Shelly
Dobie; fourth, Fred Datema; fifth,
Adam Cook, Mike Dejong; sixth,
Jason Rutledge; seventh, Benjie
Hakkers; eighth, Wesley Huizinga;
ninth, Cheryl Thompson; tenth,
Jeff Cowan, Kim Elliot; eleventh,
Leanne Jamieson, Joey Airdrie,
Martha Huizinga, Rachel Jenkins,
Mark Shepherd.
Congratulations to all of our
runners who participated and did
their best.

Starting from nothing we quickly
built a paid circulation that surpris
ed even us. Hoping for 1500 paid
when we started, we saw the total
reach 1200 paid by the time we cut
off free circulation after the first 10
weeks, then past 1500 and past
2,000 to the present 2,350 copies
sold every week. Considering that
the old Blyth Standard and Brus
sels Post each had a circulation of
about 1,000, that there would be
some overlap in their circulation
and that many farm homes were
empty now that were full 10 years
ago, we couldn’t have dreamed of
doing so well.
Things continued to go so well
we were able to add a second
reporter and put out a whole
different paper than we had origi
nally planned: one that covered
news of such things as county
council and school board and farm
events all over the county. That
was when we also started winning
awards at the provincial and
national level. In the long run, the
awards don’t mean as much as the I
support of local readers but they
are a nice little boost to the spirits
of the staff when they get down.
And you do get down in this
business. The hours are incredible
if you want to do the job right. It
means working nights and week
ends, getting up in the middle of
the night when the fire siren blows,
going to meetings when you’d
really just rather be at home with
your family. We’ve received a lot of
compliments over the years for the
quality of The Citizen and the

praise belongs with a staff that
tries to put out the best newspaper
in the county, even if it means
personal sacrifices.
Over the next few weeks we’ll try
to find ways to say thanks to all the
people in North Huron who’ve
helped make The Citizen a success.
We’ll also try to keep up the quality
of the newspaper despite what
looks to be tough economic times
ahead for the whole community.
Meantime, thanks for everything.
Q. Eggs are graded for shell
quality, interior quality and size
based on weight. True or false?
A. True. As well as the first two
factors, eggs must meet a mini
mum weight in grams before they
can be graded small, medium,
large or extra large.
