Old art of belt setting honoured A contestant scrambles over the top of the th reshi ng machine to adjust the straw blower. Belt setting is the art of getting the tractor and the threshing threshing. Here a crew races to get the belt on a steam engine, machine lined up and the separator rolling and ready for the One of the most impressive contests at The competition grows from the time the Thresher Reunion each year is the belt when the threshing gang arrived on the setting competition. farm and there was considerable pride in The trick of the whole exercise is to get the belt on the moving drive wheel of the engine without it spinning off. how quickly the thresher could be set up, ready for use. The tractor pulled the engine to its appointed place, was unhooked and driven out to where it would line up perfectly with the pulley on the machine. Meanwhile the thresher operator was putting out the feeder on the machine, putting up the pipes to direct the grain into the bin and winding out the straw blower to where the straw was to be put. Finally the belt had to be rolled out and put on the drive pulley of the tractor. If the tractor wasn’t lined up perfectly the belt would spin off and the job would have to be done again. Once the belt was lined up properly the belt would be tightened by backing up the tractor slightly and the threshing machine started turning and the threshing gang was ready to go. It’s virtually a lost skill these days but some crews still make brave attempts in the competition.
