Blyth offers plenty
to see and do
The Huron Pioneer Thresher Reunion is
one of three large attractions that has made
Blyth one of the major tourist destinations
in Huron County.
The village has been a mecca for those
who like leather and woollen products for
many years thanks to the two “Old Mills”
and the fall season, beginning about the
time of the Thresher Reunion brings peak
crowds to the mills especially on weekends.
The Thresher Reunion comes near the
end of another huge attraction. Half as old
as the Thresher Reunion, the Blyth
Festival has grown to be one of Canada’s
biggest summer theatre festivals. Nearly
50,000 people a year now see Canadian
plays ... plays that may later appear in New
York, Japan or Yugoslavia as “I’ll Be Back
Before Midnight” recently did.
It’s been another bumper season at the
Festival this year with hits like “Local
Talent”, “Albertine in Five Times”, “A
Field of Flowers” and “Firefly”. Of the
original four plays only “Local Talent” has
performances left. There are seats avail
able for performances of the show this
week despite the fact the Festival is often
sold out.
“Perils of Persephone” has the most
performances remaining this week and
next. Dan Needles’ hit comedy from last
year has been brought back and will go on
tour across Ontario heading as far north as
Kapaskasing, as far east as Perth as well as
down to Petrolia and into the Toronto area.
The play tells the story of an ambitious
township reeve who gets caught in the
middle when a tanker truck, thought to be
carrying atomic waste, goes off the road
and ends up in the ditch on his farm and
provincial politicians hurry to try to avert a
political disaster, if not a nuclear one.
ART GALLERY
Part of the Blyth Festival’s major
expansion (at a cost of nearly $2 million)
this year has been a new art gallery. The
gallery is open Monday to Saturday, 9:30
a.m. to 8:30 p.m. until September 15.
Currently showing is “A Selection of
Canadian Art” from the collection of Mr.
and Mrs. Leslie Tichner featuring works by
such famous Canadian artists as Ken
Danby and Jean Paul Riopelle.
SHOPS
The last few years have seen several
small interesting shops open in downtown
Blyth, selling everything from pottery
made on the spot to antiques and crafts to
fashions.
