Thresher Reunion has There’s plenty to do and see during the three days of the 29th annual Huron Pioneer Thresher and Hobby Association Reunion ranging from plenty of old-tyme music to craft displays to the daily parade of the tractors and equipment on display to, of course, the threshing and sawmill demonstrations by the big steam engines that are the main attraction at the show. The entertainment begins even before the Thresher Reunion opens with a fiddle jam session at the steel shed Thursday evening with Lois Hodgins as MC. The show opens Friday at 9 a.m. with a special day for senior citizens and the handicapped. Admission for those groups is only $1 (admission for the other two days is $3 per person). The Huron Strings will perform from 1-1:30 and 2-2:30 at the stage beside the arena. This is part of the variety program that continues from 1 to 4 p.m. At 4:30 the daily parade will take place. The craft show in the arena and the flea market outside will be on all day. Friday night the Jamboree will take place in the arena auditorium from 7:30 to 1 a.m. Johnny Brent will MC this contest that gives fiddlers a chance to perform. Saturday the events begin off the grounds bright and early with the Blyth Fire Department’s pancake breakfast at the Blyth Fire Hall at the corner of Dinsley St. East and Mill St. Breakfast will be served from 7:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. The gates open at the fairgrounds at 8 a.m. the Dave Chittick Band performs at the stage by the arena at 11 a.m. The official opening takes place at 1 p.m. at the “van” stage south of the arena. The first of the special events competitions, the belt-setting race for tractors will take place at 1 p.m. In the competition two partici­ pants form a team to race against the clock to set up a threshing machine and get the belt “set” from the tractor to the thresher and get it up to threshing speed. At 2 p.m. at the arena stage, the fiddlers competition will begin. From 2-3 the clowns and puppets will entertain in the arena auditorium. At 3 p.m. the popular threshing demon­ stration takes place at the south end of the grounds. Driven by one of the huge steam engines, the threshing machine gobbles up sheaves and spits out straw to the delight of crowds that gather. For the youngsters who want to try their hand (or feet) at competition there will be a pedal-tractor pull at 3:30 on the Radford ball diamond. Of course during the day there are other old farm jobs demonstrated such as the shingle mill and the steam-powered saw mill, one of the most popular displays at the Thresher Reunion year after year. At 4:30 all the tractors, steam engines and cars parade past the reviewing stand.
