I Legislation to increase compen sation paid to farmers for predator damage was introduced June 14 by Ontario Minister of Agriculture and Food David Ramsay. The amend ments to the Dog Licensing and Livestock and Poultry Protection Act increase maximum compensa tion levels to more closely repre sent current market conditions. “The proposed legislation also expands the classes of predators for which compensation can be claimed to include bears, foxes, ravens, crows and blackbirds. This reflects current compensation prac tices,” Ramsay said. Existing legislation specifies only wolves and domestic dogs. In addition, the bill defines government policy regarding pay ment for flock damage. Ramsay also recommended that the responsibilities of the Wolf Damage Assessment Board could be effectively assumed by the Farm Products Appeal Tribunal. As well, the bill would give honey bee owners the right to appeal awards J POLICE. DEPT :____ THS BE8T PLACE FOR FAST RESULTS J for compensation under the act. The amendments also call for the act’s title to be changed to the Livestock, Poultry and Bees Dam age Compensation Act because the dog licensing provisions were transferred to the Municipal Act as of June 1, 1990. The transfer provides for the consolidation of legislation governing dog control and dog licensing in one act under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Municipal Affairs.
