This is something that seems to be
prevalent right across the province,
he said.
Huron had budgeted for an
increase of 25 per cent for welfare
costs over last year because of the
STEP program but costs have
outrun even that and it appears a
deficit is likely to arise, Mr.
McKinnon said.

All requirements on the county’s
part for approval of the proposal for
two new Huronviews, one at Brus
sels, have been completed, Wayne
Lester, Administrator of Huron
view told Huron County Council
Thursday at its June meeting.
All the plans and approvals for
the two sites have beep submitted
to the Ministry of Community and
Social Services, Mr. Leslie said. He
anticipated it would take a few
weeks to receive Ministry approval.
Meanwhile the Ministry official
most familiar with the Huron plans,
Linda Girard, has been seconded to
the Provincial office of the Ministry
for a year and Lossie Fuller,
deputy-reeve of Exeter, worried
this might complicate the situation.
Mr. Lester said Ms. Girard’s
replacement, Jim Hignett is both
familiar with the Huron plans and
also with Huron, having supervised
seniors housing in the county. Mr.
Lester and Mr. Hignett met May 8
to discuss the plans.*****
A cap placed on the amounts that
can be charged by municipal homes
for the aged will have no effect on
Huronview, Mr. Lester said. He
explained the cap came about
because last year 23 municipal
homes had very high per diem
rates. The province averaged out
all the rates charged across the
province, and set a cap rate at $94,
the provincial average. Any char
ges over that amount will not be
paid by the province and must be
paid 100 per cent by the municipal

Lost records of road widenings
on County Road 12 between Walton
and Brussels could cause problems
for landowners trying to sell their
land but the county has moved to
remedy the situation. The road was
widened in the 19.402s and 1950’s
but only some of the deeds for the
land purchased from nearby farm
ers have been registered and some
records were lost in a fire. The
county road committee approved
going through a series of quit claim
deeds to clear up titles.He****
The grass fire that covered many
acres near Auburn a few weeks
back will cost the county $1,400.
County road crews inadvertently
started the fire when they burned
some brush and it spread into farm
fields. Blyth firemen battled the
spreading fire for hours before
finally getting the help of nearby
farmer Garnet Wright to plow a
firebreak around the grassfire. The
county agreed to pay the $1,300 fire
call to the fire department and $100
to Mr. Wright for the use of his
machinery.dfc sfe sfe sfe
