w Crime Stoppers THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, MAY 30, 1990. PAGE 21. Shopping “Might do”, Mary Lowe seems to be saying as she tries out a sweater at the Brussels Rebekahs’ Spring Variety Fair at the Brussels Library Friday night. The event Friday and Saturday featured not only used clothing but also a bake table and tea room to raise money for Rebekahs’ causes. Many people wonder how they can call Crime Stoppers and receive a reward while their identity re mains unknown. What happens is this; when a tipster calls he or she is given a personal identification code that he or she can call back to check on the progress of the case, offer further information or to claim a reward. If you are entitled to a reward you pick a time and place for the cash payment and identify yourself with your personal identification code. To further protect your identity the reward can be paid by someone who does not come from the same part of the county that you do. You never give your name when you call and so there is no way for anyone to know who you are. Another thing that happens with Crime Stoppers is that a tipster will call a Crime Stoppers program in other areas to report crimes in Huron County and this way even if they feel the local co-ordinator night recognize their voice they do not have to worry and the call will be relayed to the Huron County Crime Stoppers program. Rewards have been paid for tips about crimes such as Robbery, Possession of a Narcotic, Posses sion of stolen property, Driving while under suspension, Break Enter and Theft and Mischief. The majority of tipsters who call, in fact about 90 per cent in Huron County, do not call and request a reward but rather call to help stop crime within their community, it seems that it is a way for them to help clean up crime in their community and remain anony mous. Many calls are in response to the caller having read a Crime Stop pers “Crime of the week’’ news paper article and either they know about the Crime in the article or it reminded them of another crime they know about and prompts them to call. The tipster does not need to feel that their information is not enough to help, call anyway as you may not be the only one calling about a specific crime but that little piece of of information that you offer could be the key that puts the case together and allows it to be solved. Crime Stoppers is a community program meant to serve the area but it requires the public to call in the tips in order to work. If you have information about a crime call Crime Stoppers of Huron County, 1-800-265-1777 and you will be eligible to receive a reward of up to $1,000. You will never have to reveal your name nor appear in court. Remember crime doesn’t pay Crime Stoppers does. Recycling glass, cans, plastic soft drink containers and news papers can help reduce pressure on landfill sites and incinerators and conserve natural resources.
