Madill Secondary School, Wing ham, is the recipient of the Most Improved Player Award in women’s varsity soccer at Redee mer College, Ancaster, Ontario. “I hadn’t even considered my self for the award,” says Katrina, who has never believed herself to be athletic. ‘‘My previous sports experience basically included watching WWF wrestling on Saturdays,” she adds. Katrina, who enjoyed the season in women’s soccer, is completing her first year of studies at Redeem er in honours French with a minor in English. She is planning to pursue a career in translation or interpretation. Redeemer College is Eastern Canada’s only private Christian liberal arts university. THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, MAY 2, 1990. PAGE 19. The prize was provided by Blyth Veterinary Clinic. Little guys doing their part to save environment Continued from page 5 instructed my children to turn off the tap while brushing their teeth and to think about what they want to eat or drink before they open the fridge door. I wash my tin cans and remove the labels from them. I bundle by newspapers, don’t burn leaves and my children are trying to pack themselves litterless lunch es. And I’m willing to make more changes around my home, yet after all this the soft drink bottlers (and other manufacturers as well) say too often that it’s up to us. They’re not going to do anything, it’s our choice. Well, frankly I think I have enough on my plate. With almost everyone in society today becoming more sensitive to the critical condi tion of our planet and taking what steps they can to minimize the damage I don’t understand how the bottlers of soft drinks can justify their minimal use of refillable bottles. would have to pay the for deposits, pick up charge retailers, deliver - but hassles are easily There would be hassles involved - they retailer bottles, bottles overcome by big guys. I watched the Earth Day special on television on April 22 and I was appalled and frightened by some of the information related to us. It’s easy living in a rural community to not fully comprehend the atrocities that are being committed against ‘‘Mother Earth” and the impact they are having, I guess, but we are developing a conscience about environmental concerns. Now, isn’t it time that some of the major contributors to the problem did the same? After all if a little guy like myself can make a difference, just think what the big guys can do.
