Centre and RIDE to thank drivers for remaining sober The message behind the Huron Addiction Assessment and Referral Centre’s third campaign fighting drinking and driving is “Thank You for Being a Sober Driver’’ and it will be launched on July 1 and run through to November. Last year’s program to warn drivers of the hazards of drinking and driving was the party kit, which was available at the liquor stores. According to the centre’s prog gram director, Meryl Thomas, the summer months are the worst for inebriated drivers, not during the Christmas season like everyone might think. The program works in conjunc tion with RIDE (Reduce Impaired Driving Everyone) spot checks conducted by police. This summer if people are stopped by RIDE and the driver is not under the influ ence of alcohol he will be given a folder to thank him for being a sober driver. The folder is used to hold the vehicle registration and insurance. However, when drivers blow a “warn’’ on the breath test their license will be automatically sus pended for a 12 hour period. When this time is over they will pick up their license at the police station and will be given information on the negative costs of drinking and driving, both social and financial. Mrs. Thomas noted that though people are becoming more aware of the penalties there are still those who take chances, adding that a large number of these are teen agers. She points out that it doesn’t take much for a teenage boy to get drunk, while a girl will become inebriated even more quickly. The program is funded by the Ministry of the Attorney General’s Community Grants Program and all OPP detachments and county municipal police forces will receive the folders and information. MPP Jack Riddell recently pre sented a cheque for $8,000 to Mrs. Thomas for the program. In an earlier press release Mr. Riddell had stated that the Ontario govern ment recognizes and supports the efforts of groups like Huron Addic tion Assessment and Referral to keep our roads free of impaired drivers.
