Women meet in Clinton for annual institute banquet Auburn The annual Women’s Institute banquet was held at the Blue Fountain Restaurant, Clinton at noon on April 11. The meeting opened with the ode and grace and a delicious meal was served. Mrs. Erma Cartwright welcomed all and the special speaker Mrs. Mary Hunter, district president. There were 16 members and one guest present. A card was signed for Viola Raithby, a member who was in hospital. The minutes were read by the secretary Kay Lapp and she also read the correspondence and it was dealt with. The District Annual will be held at St. Helens on Saturday, May 28. The treasurer’s yearly report was given by Tena Empy. The roll call was payment of fees. The card report for the year was given by Jean Plaetzer. It was stated that the Auburn Lions Club had hung new doors on the Community Hall and they are planning on installing a light outside the hall. Reports were read by the Standing Commit­ tee for the past year. Mrs. Cartwright introduced the guest speaker Mrs. Mary Hunter, district president. She installed the officers for 1990-1991 and gave an interesting talk concerning Women’s Institute and the work they do for communities and said to try and hold the group together if possible and try and get new members. She said “Short Cours­ es’’ were coming back from the Ministry of Agriculture. June is W.I. month and things will be planned then. She said there would be a Quilt Show on June 7 and 8. She read an excellent poem, “If you were born before 1945“ about all the changes in our world today and this was very humorous. Mrs. Cartwright thanked her for the message. Members showed their appreciation to Mrs. Cartwright, the outgoing president, for her faithful work in the past. Mrs. Evelyn Merrill, the new president, spoke a few words and hoped for the same support in her upcoming office as president. The meeting closed with the Queen. Phone 526-7589 Special services held at Knox A combined service of worship for the Londesboro and Auburn United Church was held in Knox United Church, Auburn on Good Friday evening at 8 p.m. Rev. David Snihur was in charge of the service with Mrs. Bernice Gross as organist and Marjorie McDougall at the piano. A quartette composed of Dave Snihur, Ell Lapp, Nicole and Jack Middlecamp sang two numbers “Down at the Cross” and “He did it all for me”. Members came foward to receive the communion which was served by Rev. David Snihur, and Maurice Bean, Clerk of Session. The sermon topic was entitled “What Jesus did for me” and the seven last words from the cross were contemplated with slides shown by Kevin Web­ ster. The offering was received by Larry Plaetzer and Murray Rollin- son. The service concluded with the singing of Old Rugged Cross and Benediction. KNOX UNITED CHURCH EASTER SUNDAY SERVICE Rev. David Snihur conducted the Easter Service at Knox United Church and Bernice Gross was organist and Nicole Middlecamp at the piano. Call to Worship was read alter­ nately followed by the hymn “Jesus Christ is Risen Today”. Rev. Snihur gave the Prayer of Approach followed by the Lord’s Prayer said in unison. The Junior choir sang an Easter song under the leadership of Shelley Worsell and Karen Webster. Children’s song was “Hallelu, Hallelu” followed by the children’s time story. The hymn, “Christ Arose” was sung. A prayer chorus was sung. Rev. Snihur’s sermon was en­ titled “Christ The Lord is Risen”. The offering was received by Murray Rollinson, Peter Verbeek, Larry Plaetzer and Bob Worsell. The hymn, “He Lives” was sung followed by the Benediction and benediction response. CONFIRMATION AT KNOX UNITED CHURCH At Knox United Church on Palm Sunday, nine young people were confirmed as new members. Confirmed were Annette Vin­ cent, Sandra Popp, Beverley Le- comte, Janice Webster, Rose Marie Young, Susan Dobie, Donna Lynn Armstrong, Allyson Chamney and Ruth Anne Bakker. Rev. David Snihur was in charge of the confirmation and each new mem­ ber received a membership certifi­ cate and Bible presented by their elder or sponsor. Mrs. Bonnie Armour and daugh­ ter Julie of Kitchener spent Good Friday with her parents Mr. and Mrs. Tom Jardin. Mr. and Mrs. Ed Haines and family of Beamsville spent Easter with his parents Mr. and Mrs. Don Haines. There will be a shower for Nancy Verbeek at Knox United Church on Thursday, April 19 at 8 p.m. Please bring sandwiches or squares and there are boxes in the stores. Mrs. Viola Raithby is now in Clinton Public Hospital. She is wished a speedy recovery. Visitors with Mrs. Frances Clark for the weekend were Mr. and Mrs. J. A. McIntosh, Mr. and Mrs. J. G. McIntosh, Christopher and Tracy and Mr. and Mrs. Dale Gaffin and Laura, all of London. Lisa Boonstoppel and Freddy Pot were married Saturday at Blyth Christian Reformed Church. WMS holds Easter meeting The Easter meeting of the Auburn Presbyterian W.M.S. was held at the home of Marian Haggitt. The president Martha Daer pre­ sided and gave the Call to Worship. She welcomed all present. The Worship service was followed from The Glad Tidings which included hymns, prayers and scripture read­ ings. The study was taken by Erma Cartwright entitled “Son of Earth, Son of Heaven”. An Easter card was signed by all present for Viola Raithby who is in the hospital. Martha Daer had a reading “Take Time to be Still”. Carol Daer also read one entitled “If Jesus came to your house”. The closing prayer was given. The May meeting will be at Martha Daer’s home.
