MVC A urges careful planting of trees on Earth Day To celebrate International Earth Day on April 22 the Maitland Valley Conservation Authority (MVCA) in co-operation with CKNX Broadcasting and other area Conservation Authorities, will be distributing tree seedlings to area schools. The MVCA is encouraging everyone participating in Earth Day tree planting activities to take a few moments to ensure that their tree is planted carefully and nur tured through the coming years. The following points should be kept in mind. Plant your tree as soon as possible. The roots of the tree must be kept moist at all times, up until planting. Choose a sunny, well drained location for your tree. Dig a pit 15 centimetres wider and deeper than the roots of the seedling. Spread the roots out loosely and then pack soil firmly around the seedling stem. Water the tree immediately after plant ing. Good maintenance of young trees will ensure healthy vigorous growth. Watering is extremely important during dry periods. Weeds and grasses compete with seedling for water, nutrients and sunlight. A mulch of bark chips, straw or even gravel placed at the base of the tree can reduce weed and grass competition. Trees are valuable. They create shelter and food for wildlife, reduce soil erosion and flooding, provide oxygen, remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and provide shade. Over 21,000 tree seedlings are being distributed for planting on Earth Day. With a little care these valuable seedlings will grow and play their part in improving the environment. coop} ANHYDROUS NOW AVAILABLE at 4 Locations * Hensall * Seaforth * Brucefield * Londesboro AMMONIA PrePlant or Side Dress 90 Nurse Tanks Safety Checked and ready to go Field Ready Applicators • Pull Type • Tool Bars Safety Kits Available • Delivery available - 15 MT delivery truck • Most economical form of nitrogen for your corn crop Hensall District Hensall 262-3002 Seaforth 522-1000 Brucefield 233-3948 Londesboro 523-9606. 523-4470
