The Citizen, 1990-04-18, Page 6PAGE 6. THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, APRIL 18, 1990. Easter theme of Belgrave UCW meeting A prelude of organ Easter selec tions presented by Mrs. George Procter and Mrs. Doug Cousins in conjunction with the beauty and aroma of several Easter lilies in full bloom and two multi-coloured ar rangements of flowers added to the celebration of the resurrection in Knox United Church at its seven o’clock Sunrise Service on Sunday, April 15. Mrs. Procter also accompanied the singing of the hymns and the soloist Mrs. Juanita Arkell, as she sang “God so Loved the World”. Rev. Peter D. Tucker chose, “He’s not here, and that is why He can be with us always,” as the theme of his sermonette. The scripture was Revelation 1: 4-6, 12-18 - Greetings from John to the seven churches of the province of Asia: “I turned to see who was talking to me and among them there was what looked like a human being wearing a robe - His face was as bright as the mid-day sun.” Following the concluding prayer, grace was repeated and all went down to the church schoolroom in silence to enjoy a bountiful break fast. A piano organ duet with Mrs. Sheila Cousins and Mrs. George Procter preceded the 11:15 a.m. service on the Resurrection morn ing. The large choir of mixed voices rendered the anthem, “Day of Resurrection”. While the offertory stewards, Kenneth Procter, Jeffrey McKee, Ross Higgins and John R. Taylor collected the offering, Mrs. Juanita Arkell sang, “The Holy City”. The Old Testament Lesson was Isaiah 12. The New Testament Lesson was I Peter I: 3-9. Hymns relative to the celebration were sung. The sermon by Rev. Tucker was entitled “What is all the Fuss about?” He stated, “The events of the three days previous to Easter had been devastating for Jesus’ followers. Nothing could help. They were disillusioned, and de spaired. How could things go so badly? They had no work, no Master, Teacher or Lord. Jesus was to be one to set them free; set a new road to change their lives. Something went wrong. Jesus had been arrested and taken away like a common criminal. The fol lowers could reach no conclusion. They were wrapped in sorrow since they had witnessed His death. The men cogitated; while the women took spices to the grave to annoint His body. The women pondered, “Who will roll away the stone?” Outside the tomb, one said, “He’s risen!” “Go and tell the good news to the men”. Despondence changed to joy. “It’s a reality. He’s alive! Risen!” The men were reluctant to believe. We’re like the men. Don’t be! Rid yourself of disbelief. The resurrec tion glows with belief and power. It is something to be lived. Be a believer! Twelve young people were called to the front by Gordon Bosman, Clerk of Session, Belgrave and professed their Christian faith. Rev. Tucker confirmed each one as he placed his hand on the candi date’s head. Mr. Bosman following a hand clasp of fellowship present ed each with a Bible. They later joined the congregation to partake of their first communion as church members. The new members are: Lisa Marie Alexander, Beverly Lynn Buchanan, Mark Gordon Coultes, Timothy Glen Coultes, Laurie Ann Keller, Shawn Richard Logan, Darryl Robert, Robert Marks, Steven John Marks, David Thomas McKee, Dean Murray Vincent, Daniel Ward, Janette Ward. Mrs. Alice Scott conducted the worship service which opened with the Call to Worship. Verses from three Easter hymns were sung with Mrs. Dorothy Coultes, piano accompanist. Mrs. John G. Roberts read the scripture lesson, Matthew 28: 1-19 which related the Ressurection happenings. Mrs. Scott led in prayer followed by all repeating the Lord’s Prayer. The meditation chosen by her was given. “Let us think of Easter as a season of gladness and joy.” All nature comes alive with stirr People Mr. and Mrs. Americo Arruda of Fergus visited recently with her mother Mrs. Dorothy Logan. ings of new growth. The sound of triumphant music of anthems and Hallelujahs is heard in the land. For the Resurrection proved that God had set the seal of His approval on the claims of Christ. Tragedy had changed to triumph. There is another world - “Because I live, ye shall live also”. Easter is a time of Rejoicing, Remembrance, of Gratitude for the Love that made Easter possible The speaker concluded her remarks with a poem and prayer. Mrs. Scott then asked the guest speaker Rev. John G. Roberts, to present his message. He stated scripture is the basis of everything I Corinthians 15: 1-5 reads “And he was buried, and that he rose again the third day and was seen of Cehphas, then the twelve”. The earliest account of the Resurrection was written 22 years after Jesus’ death. Paul had re ceived it. It resembled a creed, an article. To talk of the Resurrection today is a test of faith; almost an accusation of faith. Go back in memeory 21 years to July 1969 when man landed on the moon. Little impression was made on mose humans by this event. Little difference was seen just as it was with the Resurrection: It was an isolated, separate event. Here, we must take hold of ourlives! It DOES make a different you must answer “Yes” or “No”. The Resurrection is the basis of the New Testament, without it the New Testament would not have been written. The Resurrection - faith came first. Get a perspective difference between the Resurrec tion and the Moon Landing. Mr. Roberts stated that the Resurrection was never described in the Bible. We can read description of the Crucifixion the appearance of the Lord; never of the Resurrection. When Jesus appeared to disciples they didn’t know Him, nor did Mary Magdalene, nor the disciples as they went fishing. Jesus had to tell them by breaking bread, by his action and the and but the LAWRIE DECORATING 188 Queen St. Blyth 523-4930 mannerism. The implication is in His identification. He called the disciples to serve, to mission. Only recognition calls us to service and witness. These are the only terms accepted. You must see Jesus alive; you can’t just be a spectator. Recognition of the Resurrection demands obedience. The sermon on the Mount describes the kind of Christian person. You must be to talk sensibly of the Resurrection. Have confidence in God’s future. The Resurrection changes our dir ection. It reaches into the depths of our lives. Say “Yes”; Rejoice in hope. The speaker was thanked by Mrs. were noon Alice Scott. Refreshments served by the U.C.W.
