County wants CP tressles to remain for now Despite some complaints that the county was contradicting itself, Huron County Council Thursday approved a call for bridges on the abandoned CP rail line from Goder ich to Guelph to be left in place until the future of the right-of-way has been settled. The decision on the bridges came after representatives of the Mait land Trail Association appeared before council at the Dec. 7 meeting to ask the county to help prevent the bridges, particularly the large bridges over the Maitland west of Auburn and north of Goderich, from being torn down before the future use of the lands has been decided. A provincial government interministerial com mittee is currently studying wheth er the provincial government should take over the land. The Trail Association pointed out that the cost of replacing the two major bridges would be in the millions and would make it nearly impossible to operate a trail with that cost or, alternatively, without the bridges. The smaller bridges, many of which have already been removed, could be replaced, they said, but not the major bridges. The County’s Planning and Development Committee looked at the problem and voted to support the protest against the premature removal of the bridges. Copies of the county resolution are to be sent to CP, the Interministerial Commit tee and affected local municipali ties. But Dave Johnston, Reeve of Bayfield and past warden worried that the county was sending mixed signals by the policy. The county, he said, had adopted a policy that was against a recrea tional use for the land, saying that the land should be kept in public hands for possible future use as a utilities corridor. “We don’t need bridges for utilities,” he said. “I’d like it clearly stated that we do not support retention of the lands for recreational purposes.” Dr. Gary Davidson, head of the Planning and Development depart ment said the proposal is only to prevent premature removal of the tressles prior to the final disposi tion of the land. It did not contradict the county’s position, he said. Meanwhile in Goderich concrete steps have been taken to save the scenic bridge over the Maitland there. At a Dec. 18 meeting town council voted to purchase the bridge if 75 per cent of the money required could be raised from the public and if the ownership of approaches and easements could be obtained and if Colborne Town ship became involved. who nas lem a nana in building our community!
