In some ways perhaps an imperson- al travel book, African Journey is unmistakably the work of that philo- sophical and inquiring mind. The holyantin sat un- der his tree and uttered a dark pro- phecy. Peasants ran through the for- ests at night carrying pieces of bread between the villages. But Captain Rodney Savage knew nothing of these things on New Year's Eve, when he attended the Club ball, There were music, wine, beautiful women, and he was celebrating 1857, the twentieth year of Victoria's reign and the sixty- ninth of Rodney's regiment, Caroline Langford, the proud, serious visitor from England, broke into his gay mood with questions ,she had seen signs of unrest among the Indians, Rodney explained to her that the English understood the natives, that England was secure in India, with a hundred years of undisputed rule behind her. Irritating though she was, Caroline was attractive, later Captain Savage thought that their love story really began that evening. Then he met the itani of a nearby state, and became involved in an in- trigue he didn't understand until too late, Anxious to help the Raid, he misinterpreted the incident of the bullock-cart loaded with ammunition. Like many I'ritish officers, Rodney loved and trusted his sepoys and ser- ved England and India loyally: but he did not really FEEL India. When the flaming• mutiny broke on May 10, 1857, no one was prepared, although the plotting had been obvious enough, On that hideous night of terror and burning, when the English and their families were tortured and massacred, Rodney and Caroline, among the small group of survivors, faced almost PHONE 100 - 189 IVINGHAISI O O O O Ci e for V dft-wise buyers I THE LOW-PRICED Gocs.4 ,LFAta ''„,,rdffEir . 1::.::•r's real value in a gairran- teed Goodyear with the famous non-skid diamond tread—a tire t'e leer b,ailt fur ,i.ong, trouble- free mileage. After the British elections the first man we met on the street thought we might now have war, This writer thinks there is much greater likeli- hood that we will have peace. Some of you have a how-do you-do acquaintance with British history. Such will perhaps recall the profound observation of Disraeli at the Berlin Congress in 1878 when he declared that one of the results of attending that congress was to prove what he suspected to be the established fact, that neither the Crimean War, nor yet the horribly devastating war that had just treminated-the Franco- Prussian-would have taken place if England had spoken with the neces- sary firmness, Strong men make peace with hon- our, weak men with disgrace, Chur- chill is a strong man, You think his is a small majority. It is all the bet- ter for that. Large majorities breed corruption through power. Undoubtedly oratory is still the greatest influence in the art of per- suasion. Of all world orators Demos- i thenes ranks supreme, yet according to an epitomized characterization at the base of a bronze statue, methinks in Paris, he seemed to lack what Shakespeare claimed was the chief 'virtue-valor. The words at the base of that statue are worth quoting. "Divine in speech, in judgment too, divine Had valor's wreath Demosthenes been thine Fair Greece had still her freedom's ensign borne And held the scourge of Macedon in scorn." Churchill's brow wears a wreath of Valor, May God grant him such length of days as will give a new meaning to longevity, along with health of body and sanity of mind and wisdom of judgment; for no doubt, but what he has been'"brought again to high prominence in the Kingdom, for such a time as this, Fue 'OF_011;a1lY adios & Washers REPAIRED GUARANTEED SERVICE Home Appliances E. In all world conflicts one man stands out from the crowd, that is true in all history, Biblical or profane; and sure]y to all men im- bued with the spirit of freedom, and therefore of democracy, it is an en- couraging sign, a light in the dark- ness, that this redoubtable warrior again tops in triumph the highest place possible in the choice of the People of the old land. Just here pick up your dictionary and take a swift, voluntary refresher course on government, by looking up the meaning of heocracy, oligarchy democracy, bureaucracy, even ochlo- cracy, Particularly however, ponder the significance of the word geronto- cracy which, in fine, means govern- went by old men, Many will think Mr. Churchill is too old to carry on In the teeth of im- , pending world storms, uncomfortably imminent: but such might do well to think upon a saying of Sir Philip Sidney.
